My Great Grandfathers Description

Concession to tradition is more the norm than the exception in this quaint but modern British restaurant, located in the historic town of Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. Recently refurbished after the ravages of the floods in 2007, My Great Grandfathers reflects the history and tradition of the surroundings, expertly balancing it with comfortable décor and quality food.

The roast of the day is always a good choice, although you could try pan fried gammon steak with bubble and squeak potato cake, fried eggs and fresh pineapple. You would not want to miss their famed Thai fishcakes prepared with fresh lobster, crab, salmon, prawns and cod with a sweet chilli sauce, crisp salad and pickled pink ginger whilst the homemade Turkish delight with ice cream has become a popular dessert. The selection of French wines in their list does not disappoint, complementing the meal with élan.

Your Reviews of My Great Grandfathers

Amy (9 October 2009)

It was an absolutely first class birthday dinner last night and a really lovely atmosphere as well. Great service, really nice interior decor and a great menu. The Thai fishcakes were a fabulous starter and the main course of steak was awesome. Really good portion sizes and some great wines on the menu too. We were too full to have a pudding but the choice looked great! We will definitely go back again the next time I am in Tewkesbury.

Tad expensive? Maybe, but then this is not pub grub or a fast food outlet. I like to think that I have a good working knowledge of eating out from regularly visiting various standards of restaurants around the UK. In my opinion, My Great Grandfathers is, overall, up there with the better ones. Helpful, unobtrusive service and a warm, cosy sort of homely feeling greets you when you enter the establishment, accentuated by the timber beams, low ceiling, leather furniture and open fire they had going that evening. Portions are large. I had juicy garlic filled mushrooms with Swiss cheese set on an herb base and my boyfriend enjoyed the Thai fishcake starters, commenting on the effectiveness of the chilli sauce and strong lobster flavours. We went for something more basic as a main meal, but this was also beautifully cooked. It was essentially a good old roast dinner but the chef had got it just right, from the succulent chicken and tasty stuffing to the fresh vegetables and spuds. 10 out of 10. Overall, great value for money.
