Myristica Description

In one of Britain's main ports from which the British cuisine as it then was would have been imported to places like India in centuries past, the tide has turned and thousands of us are more than partial to a spot of Indian food. Indeed it was the late Robin Cook MP who drew our attention to the fact that chicken tikka masala was now amongst the top favourite British dishes, even though some seem to think it is an invention of East London.

Here at Myristica (nutmeg or spice) the traditional Indian menu has been re-written to embrace the traditional street food of India, through beach snacks to some of India's finest dishes. The staff are mainly Indian, but that does not prevent them adapting to the British seasons. Shellfish take a prominent part in the menu, with lobster Labdar seasoned with ground cashew nuts, nutmeg and ginger managing to retain its flavour such is the delicacy of the spices applied.

For those who like a little culinary violence there is the celebrated vindaloo curry from Goa, with tender lamb or chicken slow cooked with hot fresh red and green chillies, or Karahi prawns, lightly curried and served with fresh lime juice, spring onion and ginger.

Opinion wavers over the question of wine with Indian food. Some feel it to be a matter of impulse on any particular day, but wine or beer and lager there is plenty on offer at Myristica.

Bristol has its fair share of Indian restaurants, but this one will add some serious competition to the equation.

We visited Myristica Restaurant in Bristol over the Easter weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The food was very fresh and tasty and the service polite and friendly. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

We went to Myristica during a long weekend in Bristol in August and were initially attracted by the signs outside advertising various delicious fish dishes and then a recommendation from a family member; we thought we'd give it a try. Fantastic! We went relatively early on a Saturday night thinking it might be busy but whilst there was a steady flow of people, from couples to large groups, it never seemed crowded. The décor is lovely, modern yet exotic and is very spacious and relaxed. The small side rooms and alcoves seemed perfect for more private parties and a large group of blokes were seated in one of these and whilst they were quite boisterous, they didn't disturb the rest of the restaurant because they were separate. Starters included garlic chicken cooked on a skewer and were the juiciest chicken I've ever had - amazing! Can't remember what my husband had but he loved it. Mains were both fish – sea bass fillets on spinach and black cod kebabs and garlic rice, both excellent. The cheese naans are so fresh and you can see them being made to order in the open kitchen. Everything about this restaurant was brilliant. The members of staff are lovely and the food is great. It's just a shame we live in Manchester. We would definitely go back next time we're in Bristol.

When one of the country's most respected and leading critics says that a restaurant in this group is 'the best Italian Restaurant outside London' it is time to take them seriously. Britain's love ...
