Myristica

51 Welshback, Bristol, BS1 4AN

Located in one of Britain's main ports from where the British cuisine, as it was then, would have been imported to places like India in centuries past, but now the tide has turned. Indeed it was the late Robin Cook MP to whom we are indebted for drawing our attention to the fact that chicken tikka masala was now amongst the top favourite British dishes. At Myristica, the traditional menu has been rewritten to embrace the street food of India and you could expect anything from beach snacks to some of the finest dishes from the cuisine. Prawns form a prominent part of the menu whilst the lobster, seasoned with ground cashew nuts, nutmeg and ginger is a popular choice. For those who like a little culinary violence there is the celebrated vindaloo curry from Goa in lamb and chicken variations.

Opinion wavers over the question of wine with Indian food. Some feel it to be a matter of impulse on any particular day, but then be it wine or beer, there is plenty on offer at Myristica.

REVIEWS OF Myristica

Hemant (21 April 2009)

We visited Myristica Restaurant in Bristol over the Easter weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The food was very fresh and tasty and the service polite and friendly. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Kat101 (22 August 2008)

We went to Myristica during a long weekend in Bristol in August and were initially attracted by the signs outside advertising various delicious fish dishes and then a recommendation from a family member; we thought we'd give it a try. Fantastic! We went relatively early on a Saturday night thinking it might be busy but whilst there was a steady flow of people, from couples to large groups, it never seemed crowded. The décor is lovely, modern yet exotic and is very spacious and relaxed. The small side rooms and alcoves seemed perfect for more private parties and a large group of blokes were seated in one of these and whilst they were quite boisterous, they didn't disturb the rest of the restaurant because they were separate. Starters included garlic chicken cooked on a skewer and were the juiciest chicken I've ever had - amazing! Can't remember what my husband had but he loved it. Mains were both fish – sea bass fillets on spinach and black cod kebabs and garlic rice, both excellent. The cheese naans are so fresh and you can see them being made to order in the open kitchen. Everything about this restaurant was brilliant. The members of staff are lovely and the food is great. It's just a shame we live in Manchester. We would definitely go back next time we're in Bristol.
