New Samsi
36-38 Whitworth Street, Manchester, M1 3NR
Something of a fixture on the Manchester restaurant scene since opening its doors in 1993, Samsi continues to be popular among with its range of attractively priced sushi and Japanese meals. Light wooden chairs and plants create a clean and fresh ambience on the ground floor, while the upper floor with its traditional low level seating is more relaxed affair. The kitchen handles well-sourced ingredients with care and confidence as evident in appetisers of rare beef sashimi with daikon, ginger, wasabi and soy, seared salmon sashimi with a citrusy yuzu dressing, and teriyaki chilli pork ribs. There is a wide selection of main courses ranging from samurai shichimi and katsu style dishes to Japanese curries and yakisoba or ramen noodles.Something of a fixture on the Manchester restaurant scene since opening its doors in 1993, Samsi continues to be popular among with its range of attractively priced sushi and Japanese meals. If you have room for puddings try the daifuku mochi, a sweet red bean cake with a coating of sticky rice. A collection of sushi, sashimi and bento boxes will satisfy diners looking for something quick and simple.
Set banquet and early evening menus provide exceptional value and you may be tempted to try the Sumo feast with garlic and ginger karage chicken, teriyaki salmon and a Japanese sweet selection.

REVIEWS OF New Samsi
Murray (4 June 2008)
My love for Japanese food developed, by living in Japan for several years, which qualifies me to write something here. Without being biased, in my opinion New Samsi offers the best Japanese food at a good UK price in the Northwest. The food and service were both excellent. If you want to taste real Japanese cuisine and actually find Japanese people present, a big thing in itself, then I suggest you visit this place. The taste of sushi, sashimi, tempura, sake, beer, etc. are typical of that in Japan and the menu is varied and long. They even do bento or lunchbox. The basement shop has some serious stuff for the culture vultures. The decor is rather typical of a Japanese izakaya or restaurant. My only gripe is that bento could be a bit more filling and I don’t ever recall eating salmon tempura in Japan but then, I love my nihonshoku or Japanese cuisine and really fussy about it. All in all, you seriously should not miss this place.
