No.5 North Street Description
The pretty Cotswold town of Winchcombe is home to No.5 North Street, Kate and Marcus Ashenford's warm and rustic modern European restaurant. The beauty of the perfectly formed three AA rosette dining venue lies in its simplicity, most visible in its half-timbered exterior, and once you enter, in its interior of dark red walls, beamed ceilings and well-spaced bare tables and brown leather chairs.
It is clear that Michelin starred Chef Marcus' focus lies in giving the people of Winchcombe an opportunity to sample beautifully created dishes that are all cooked to very high standards.
You could begin your journey with a starter of smoked haddock and cauliflower puree with baby spinach, poached egg, and a cheese and caraway sable before moving on to a main course of monkfish with sweet-and-sour chicken wings, baby fennel and five-spice reduction. A dessert of coconut milk rice pudding with pineapple and molasses sorbet could provide a hugely satisfying end to the meal.

I have eaten there twice recently, and both times the experience was exceptional. With it being small and well run, you have the added bonus of feeling extremely well looked after, with no stuffiness. Having also eaten recently in a very highly rated Cotswold establishment, in my opinion there was no comparison, and this restaurant can easily run with the best. Looking forward to my next outing, and that would be soon, to treat a very dear friend, who is visiting from over the pond. She would not be disappointed.

For someone who has a larger than average appetite, I thought I was going to be disappointed. Nothing could be further from the reality. Our Sunday lunch was the most fantastic journey of tastes and when we had finished I was replete. The adventure started with two surprise offerings which did not appear on the menu. Firstly we were offered an amazing aperitif of Welsh rarebit. This was followed by butternut squash soup served with a homemade dual flavour loaf. Shame my friends bread cutting skills did not match the cuisine. The entrees and main courses were delicately balanced, everything designed to enhance the eating experience. This wonderful meal was rounded off by a gorgeous selection of sweets. I was completely satisfied with the food, the way it was presented and served. A most enjoyable experience. It could only have been made better with a bottomless coffee pot.
