No.6 Description

Well, it had to happen sooner or later. Various forms of opposition have arrived in Padstow to give dear old Rick a run for his money whilst he and Chalky progressed round Britain flushing out cosy middle aged ladies with recipes to cherish, but probably none has been more serious than No 6, even if we are all pals together.

No 6 claim that their cooking style ranges from old fashioned braises and daubes, complex meat and offal dishes to local caught fish and shellfish. Add to this desserts to die for and a selection of British cheeses such as you may never have seen before, and you have No 6 in focus, even if it defies the cuisine list.

Amidst modern and clean cut surroundings such dishes as Dorset Blue lobster and new potato salad, with marinated tomatoes, green beans and Woodland sorrel vies with pan-fried scallops with Clonakilty black pudding, parsnips and vanilla, as a starter, before moving on to Scottish fillet of beef, hand cut chips, braised onions, asparagus and Béarnaise sauce, or warm South Coast mackerel with sweet peppers, spiced cous cous, cucumber and lemon.

A traditional bread and butter pudding can still hold its own against baked apple with rum frangipane, winter berries and Cornish clotted cream. The team behind this is none other than Paul Ainsworth, David Boulton and Chris Mapp, all of whom met when they worked at Pétrus.

The last time I was at Padstow there were enough people in it to keep a fleet of restaurants afloat, in fact come to think of it . . . . . . . . Either way I think you would have to be a pretty iffy restaurateur to go broke in Padstow - and these guys are very good.

Your Reviews of No.6

R. Clark (26 April 2007)

I have eaten at No. 6 on three occasions since it has been under the guidance of Molly and Paul. In my opinion it simply is the finest restaurant in Padstow. (And yes, I have eaten at the others, including The Seafood Restaurant).

Whilst I find that, on balance, some of the fresh fish does not have the same level of subtlety and invention as the combinations of flavours in their other dishes; you are always guaranteed to be presented with excellent attention to detail in both the culinary experience and the level of service you will receive from Molly and her team. Moreover, the ambience and feel of the restaurant exudes quality that reflects this.

My personal recommendation for anyone who is lucky enough to get a table would be to sample the 'taste of Number 6' dessert which remains good value with a £5 supplement for two guests. On my last visit this was accompanied by a bottle of Pansal Del Calas dessert wine, which was both original and excellent.

Yes, our bill came to over £200 once the 10% service charge was added, but it was all worth it. No.6 is not for customers who are looking for an alternative to beans on toast, but then by extension, neither is Padstow an alternative to Weston-super-Mare as a destination for a holiday or short break.

Graham Healy (28 February 2007)

Well overpriced fancy food with no hint of locally sourced food - could have been in a restaurant in London and paying less for better food. With the set meal coming out at nearly £100 this is nonsense prices for a very, very average restaurant. Give me Rick Stein any day.
