Nordic Bakery
14 Golden Square, London, W1F 9JF
There are said to be 30,000 Finns in London, in which case it surprises me that nobody thought of Nordic Bakery until now. Finns like their coffee breaks with friends and it is rumoured that a significant percentage of them have been to check the place out, and approval is rife, not only with the Finns, but their Scandinavian chums as well. As ever with anything from that part of the world, design is important and Nordic Bakery is a monument to good design. Having got that right they have gone on to ensure that the food and drink is exactly as it should be with strong black coffee, accompanied by Karelian pies, which are flat savoury pastries, with other excitements such as open sandwiches of gravadlax, boiled egg, anchovies or herring. There are said to be 30,000 Finns in London, in which case it surprises me that nobody thought of Nordic Bakery until now. Cinnamon buns and Swedish Tosca cake, an unctuous confection not unlike Eton Mess with more body, are popular desserts. A place for Scandinavians this may be but I bet it won't be long before the Brits are in there as well.
