Normand, Le Description
"When a local French friend contacted me to say that there was a new French restaurant in town, she said it was great to have a proper French restaurant that wasn't overpriced and pretentious like they sometimes are in Britain. I had to verify this of course, so my partner and I went for lunch on a busy weekday just before Christmas.
We found Le Normand in the ancient narrow street linking the gleaming new Gate Cinema complex with Newcastle's Chinese quarter. We were welcomed by the French waitress who showed us to a table in the dark panelled dining area, bringing a Kir and presenting us with a menu just like the ones in France - you know the sort, brown leather binder and the soft plastic-covered pages inside. My mind was immediately transported to a location somewhere in France as I began to enjoy the atmosphere.
I had a generous portion of mussels in white wine (£4.75) to start and my partner had a splendid tomato crumble (£4.15), followed by a rack of lamb with whole garlic confit. My chicken fricassee was delicious, suitably accompanied by rice and Mediterranean vegetables. With a glass of excellent house Pays d'Oc wine (£2.80) the meal went down very well, and the service was good. Le Normand specialises in crêpes and fondues, which we didn't have the chance to try this time. We will return."

I dined there with my boyfriend and we felt the food was pretty terrible. My steak was leathery and well over cooked. I had frog’s legs to start, which I have never had before so I couldn't say whether they were good or bad. I think the presentation of the food was lacking and a bit lazy, there were thick pots with different sides on the plate as if each one had been in the microwave, the pots were boiling hot and our wine was corked too. It’s a shame as we had high hopes despite other stories. To their service they did remove these items from our bill but it’s enough to not make me try it again. If I go out to dinner, I like to eat not save a few pounds. We did like the low key atmosphere and we had a nice candle lit table in the window but I'm afraid it wasn't up to scratch otherwise.

My girlfriend and I visited Le Normand last week and had a very good meal. The staff were friendly, the menu was appetising and setting was good. They also happened to have Languedoc, our favourite wine. The music and lighting was a let down. We expected a low lit setting playing French music but were disappointed to hear over powering French pop in a bright room. I suggest they sort out some dimmers and tunes - you've got yourself a great restaurant.
