Oak Tree Inn, The

The pub is a whitewashed cottage in a quiet village, where seasonal ingredients are locally sourced and get a gourmet touch. The pub is run by Alastair & Claire Ross. Alastair has spent the last 14 years in London working at The Savoy, Leith's and, more recently, a private members' club on the Strand. Clearly Mr Ross felt the need to leave the pampered South for a change of scenery.

Imaginative starters may include terrine of chicken with ham and foie gras; warm salad of field mushrooms with pine nuts and truffle dressing; smoked haddock chowder; warm salad of crispy pork belly and black pudding with honey & mustard dressing; Butternut Squash soup with white truffle oil; hand-rolled spaghetti with pesto and parmesan; steamed Shetland mussels with red onion, chilli, ginger and mint.

Main courses continue the tantalisation of taste buds with best end of lamb with gratin potatoes and provencale vegetables; beef casserole with olive oil mash, bacon and mushrooms; crispy duck leg confit with roasted sweet potato, wild mushrooms and merguez sausages; roast fillet of halibut with pancetta-wrapped scallop, black pudding and parsley mash; fillets of royal sea bream with crab and ginger cannelloni and shellfish sauce.

We Yorkshire folk do like our puddings, both savoury and sweet, and the Oak Tree doesn't let us down with such sweet treats as wine-poached plums with honey and yoghurt ice-cream; lemon and raspberry crème brûlée; baked vanilla cheesecake with cherries; hot chocolate fondant with pistachio ice-cream; white chocolate custard tart with cherries; sticky date and walnut pudding with rum and raisin ice-cream.
