Oki-Nami

You would not be mistaken to think that Japan has arrived in Brighton as the Oki-Nami Japanese shop and restaurant aim to introduce the important aspects of Japanese life, with its long history and distinctive customs, to the locals. Hence the name that loosely translated means 'provider of all things' is so applicable to them. For those who find Japanese cuisine to be something of a mystery, there isn't a better way to initiate one's self than by trying their otsumami or the Japanese tapas of cabbage, pork, salmon or shiitake mushroom dumplings dipped in sesame sauce. Apart from these miniature delights, the highly regarded sushi selection is served with nigiri, pairs of rice balls or maki, rolls of rice. You would not be mistaken to think that Japan has arrived in Brighton as the Oki-Nami Japanese shop and restaurant aim to introduce the important aspects of Japanese life, with its long history and distinctive customs, to the locals. If all else fails there is always the origami and green tea option, with lessons in sushi and calligraphy as side orders, all of which are likely to make you very hungry indeed.

REVIEWS OF Oki-Nami
Pete Jenkins (21 April 2009)
We went last Saturday with 6 friends and had some cocktails in the bar upstairs which was really busy but in a nice way. The Japanese version of the Long Island was really good and the balcony was great for people watching - lovely view into the Pavillion. We then went down for our table and had a whole selection of great sushi; I especially liked the spicy tuna. The dumplings were really tasty, definitely homemade. For mains I had the sizzling steak and finished off with a tempura ice cream. The lovely blonde waitress we had was bubbly and bright and to cap it all they offered us 2 for 1 when we went back to the bar. We couldn't say no, and stayed till close! A really good night, definitely recommend it and the décor is stylish too.

I would just like to comment on the poor service we have had from this restaurant. I booked Oki-Nami for my wife's 40th birthday with 30 guests invited and were persuaded by Mike the owner to use his bar upstairs, to obviously take advantage of the increased drinks sales no doubt, and dine informally with the waiters bringing the food around on plates rather than a more formal sit down arrangement as we did originally book the private dining room at the back of the restaurant downstairs. Our concern about people being not being satisfied were realised when the food was extremely slow coming out and there not being enough of it. There were many hungry people who hadn't eaten and were expecting a decent dinner, this didn’t happen. They must have taken a fortune over the bar and also demanded £20 per head. Having raised our concerns throughout the night the situation didn't improve and we decided to ask for a refund the following Monday after the Saturday's disappointment. Despite a constructive email which needed a chase there was an offer of a £5 voucher per person which we were not happy about. A further e-mail was sent again with a reminder and as of today’s date we have still not heard from Mike the owner – it’s now April 8th and still no resolution. 30 customers lost I'm afraid Mike. Lovely venue, but shame about the food and the service.
