Old Harkers Arms, The Description

Prior to 1985, the Old Harkers Arms was the basement of an old warehouse overlooking the Shropshire Union Canal. The building was derelict. Using reclaimed materials such as chemistry lab counters and old mahogany doors to make the bars, adds to the feeling that the pub has in fact been there for at least a century: in the nicest sense!

The pub has a good range of well-kept real ales, which are helpfully described on a chalkboard. A good choice of wines is also available.

The food is good and freshly cooked, with a menu that changes regularly. Starters might include tomato soup; ham hock terrine with curried apple chutney; salmon and smoked haddock fishcake; or poached eggs, spinach and hollandaise sauce on a muffin.

Main courses include roast beef and Yorkshire pudding; braised lamb shoulder with root vegetables; duck breast with potato and celeriac rosti; pork and herb sausage, leek mash and onion gravy; beef and black pudding hotpot; penne pasta with tomatoes, broccoli and pesto; mackerel with new potatoes, peas and bacon; haddock in beer batter with hand-cut chips and mushy peas; or Ploughman's with locally produced cheeses.

There is a good range of sandwiches, puddings and cheeses available.

Your Reviews of Old Harkers Arms, The

Tom (11 January 2005)

Sympathetically converted canalside warehouse that makes an interesting setting for a bar / restaurant. The atmosphere is that of a well patronised pub that serves good quality fare, but makes no pretensions to be an all singing and dancing gastro delight. This is also emphasised in the prices that are reasonable. Service element could be improved upon and more attentive and better trained staff would be a definite plus point. Another improvement would be to change the menu more regularly.

Harkers serves great European style food, for either snacks such as sandwiches or more hearty meals for a good price. Its all old wooden floors, wooden furniture book cases and surrounds. It has big windows and feels light and airy. It is visited by a mixture of clientele. It has a selection of real ales and good wines. I think it’s a great lunchtime venue and I must have been between 50 and 100 times and never had a bad meal. I have also visited the Pant yr Ochain, Dysart Arms, Glas Fryn, Grosvenor Arms in the North West which are just some of the other pubs from the 12 in the Brunning and Price Group which all have equally great food and character.
