Old Passage Inn, The Description

old passage inn gloucestershireStanding remotely on the banks of the tidal River Severn The Inn marks the site of an ancient ford or passage, across this, the longest river in Britain. St Augustine the first Archbishop or Canterbury is recorded as crossing at Arlingham, in 604AD to meet Welsh Christians at the Synod of the Oak, a few hundred yards upstream. What a pity he missed the splendid food and accommodation of today.

This history together with the tranquil setting and broad vistas of river and forest are now complemented by an excellent Restaurant, with Rooms, offering the highest standards of welcome, the freshest and most delicious foods, the finest wines. Everything in fact that makes top English Inns the envy of the world.

Samuel Johnson once said "There is nothing which has been contrived by man, by which so much happiness is produced as a Good Inn."

The Inn is run by Josephine Living and her brother Raoul Moore and are supported by a young, skilled and enthusiastic team.

Somerset Moore, one of the owners was the Fish Chef at the world famous, Maison Prunier in St James, London, and subsequently spent a career promoting and specialising in fresh fish and shellfish.

The next generation of the Moores have picked up his enthusiasm and are proud to offer you a superb range of shellfish stored in seawater tanks to ensure their freshness, the best oysters, lobsters, crabs and mussels supplied by the pick of 'senders, mainly from the West country'.

These are complimented by first rate smoked and prime fish, cleverly sourced and sauced! Together with Organic meats, vegetarian dishes and top class puddings.

The cellars brim with fantastically delicious wines, some of which are imported by the 'Moores', and produced by another member of the family in Bordeaux. All this makes the journey to Arlingham a joy.

You can also stay there in one of their highly individual bedrooms, A visit to their Website will tell you more about this delightful and special spot.

Your Reviews of Old Passage Inn, The

Melanie E (8 April 2008)

My partner and I had been there a few times and though we felt it did not quite live up to its reputation, we enjoyed the freshness of the seafood on offer. Therefore we decided to take my mother for her birthday. The cold shellfish starters were very fresh, but the selection was less varied and imaginative than we had enjoyed previously. For main courses, those who chose the various fillets of fish fared better; people who chose things outside this 'comfort zone' were disappointed. I chose hot baked shellfish and my mother chose lobster, which were disappointing. What upset us even more was that the staff were not open to the friendly feedback we gave after we paid the bill.

Excellent restaurant - we ate here for a 30th birthday celebration in October 2004, and had a very good meal. The food was amazing, and the wine prices surprisingly low. We have eaten in Rick Stein's Seafood Restaurant in Padstow, and were very disappointed - The Old Passage Inn was far superior. Highly recommended.
