Old town italian

36a Old Town, London, SW4 0LB

Another addition to the crop of Italian eating houses springing up all over London. At least this one has a novel name, mooli being for those who don't know a kind of Indian radish. The mood is contemporary Italian, with shifting boundaries that embrace local ingredients and take enterprising liberties with Mama's cooking. Take, for instance, a pasta dish, fusilli with broccoli and sausage, flavoured with fennel, or veal stuffed with sautéed aubergines and ripe Taleggio cheese that hails from Lombardy. Everything suggests that this particular Italian restaurant may have distinctive features that place it a cut above the rest. The Italian restaurant is the brainchild of Mike Filpi, the Italian born founder of Eclipse Bars and former Co-Director of the Ignite Group (Eclipse, Boujis, Cocoon etc).

The Italian restaurant is the brainchild of Mike Filpi, the Italian born founder of Eclipse Bars and former Co-Director of the Ignite Group (Eclipse, Boujis, Cocoon etc). As a local resident and family man, Filpi wanted to create a venue where people could relax and enjoy simple, unpretentious dining with friends and family in the same way they do in Italy.

This has been achieved thanks to a talented, largely Italian, team including Chef Chef Roberto Mercandino, (formerly of Asia De Cuba, The Electric and Cecconi) and pastry chef Noha Moukarzel who joins Mooli from New York City where she was better known as 'Lady Marmalade' for her amazing cakes, breads and pastries.

Mooli serves breakfast (pastries and coffees) from 10 am until midday; lunch from midday to 3 pm; afternoon teas from 3 to 5 pm; Dinner from six until midnight daily. In addition a sundowners cocktail menu is served from 5 until 8 pm and a moonlighters cocktail list from 10.30 until 1 am daily. On Tuesdays from 6 pm and Sundays from midday, Douglas Ankrah himself, creator of the cocktail list and well known drinks expert, runs the bar.

REVIEWS OF Old town italian

Jane S (7 December 2009)

We ate here on Friday. With rain coming down this was a very cozy inviting restaurant. The food was fabulous the service was reasonably good. We also thought this was great value for money.

Gerome001 (30 November 2009)

This is one of those rare little restaurants that you sometimes come across. The food was fantastic, very classically Italian and the portions were a good size. We were made to feel very welcome from arrival to departure. The service was quick and not too intrusive. We are definitely going back.
