Old Vine, The

Charming Grade II listed 18th century inn in the heart of historic England's ancient capital, opposite Winchester cathedral. It has been awarded four AA stars for an inn, and was the winner of a Hampshire Hospitality Award for the quality of food, drink and service.

With meals served by friendly, knowledgeable staff in a relaxed, warm and inviting atmosphere, the menu ranges from honest, tasty pub dishes such as steak and ale pie, sausage and mash and scrumptious sandwiches made from locally baked bread to a daily-changing range of blackboard specials, like crab and prawn cocktail; slow-roasted lamb shank in a rich redcurrant gravy; sea bass fillets baked in paper bag with basil and herb oil, leek and courgette, and homemade Thai fishcakes.

Lighter options are available for lunch, including baked Somerset goat's cheese with spicy onion relish; antipasto of Italian salami, prosciutto and roasted vegetables, and chorizo sausage with patatas bravas and a tangy tomato dip.

Awarded Cask Marque accreditation for the quality of the real ales on draught, which include Timothy Taylor Landlord, Ringwood Best and at least one guest ale. Their extensive wine list covers both Old and New World in some depth, from familiar Sauvignon Blanc and Rioja to less well known Picpoul de Pinet and Chinon.

Bread, meat, preserves, ice-cream and ales are taken from local suppliers where possible. Plus they have five beautifully appointed ensuite guest rooms, featuring an elegant mix of antique furniture and contemporary design with modern comforts.
