Olive Tree, The Description

Sympathetically renovated 18th century rural pub, this airy, light restaurant captures the essence of Southern Italy with warm, efficient service in surroundings that combine contemporary style with original features.

Neapolitan chef/proprietor Raffaele Tevola combines the traditional and innovative in dishes cooked to order using the freshest, best quality produce with an emphasis on fish and pasta.

Seasonal menu includes ravioli stuffed with goat's cheese and marjoram in tomato sauce, halibut fillet with julienne of courgette in saffron sauce, rack of lamb in red wine, balsamic vinegar and rosemary and homemade Frangelico hazelnut praline ice cream. The cost of a meal can vary rather widely, dependent on whether you choose to stick to one of their pasta dishes or splurge on a starter and main course instead.

Good, diverse range of lesser known Italian wines and digestivos as well as local Adnams ale and Italian beers.

Your Reviews of Olive Tree, The

Luke (20 July 2009)

We ate there last week and we came across it by chance. The main course was excellent and the chocolate and almond desserts were to die for. The decor was really nice, the staff were very friendly and welcoming, and also the orange wheat beer was really good. A hidden gem, I only wished I lived nearer to go again, an excellent experience all round.

V Blanchard (11 January 2009)

After reading the great reviews, I had high hopes for this place; however was sadly disappointed with the whole experience. Firstly our table for two was within arms reach and definitely in earshot of a large party of 16 or more. The main course of lamb was undercooked and bloody, after asking for it slightly over the pink stage. The ‘sautéed’ potatoes consisted of 2-3 new potatoes sliced; I would give my child at least five or six of these small potatoes. My husband was still hungry after his main and the 'sweet' menu consisted of four ice cream dishes, an Italian trifle and a cake. The ice cream I chose was out of stock, the cake my husband chose represented and tasted like a stale fruit cake. To cap the disappointment over the food, we had to wait around 20 minutes between courses for our order to be taken, even though the restaurant was not busy. £46 wasted and an experience I would recommend to be avoided.
