Oliver's Restaurant

Castle Coombe, nr Chippenham, SN14 7HN

Castle Combe has changed little since the 15th century and the Castle Inn is no exception. The Inn itself goes back to the 12th century and has had the now almost obligatory conservatory added on to cope with the rush of enthusiastic diners. Personally I find that the transition from arrival in the old to dining in the new robs the occasion irretrievably of much of its magic, here or anywhere similar. However, enough of that. Start with the ham hock, lentil and quail's egg terrine, with piccalilli and toast. Move to crisp skinned cod fillet with curried mussel and coriander sauce. Round off with Cambridge burnt creams or passion fruit Pavlova followed by copious supplies of really good hot coffee.

REVIEWS OF Oliver's Restaurant

L. Hardstaff (29 December 2004)

I booked this place in December for my parents’ 40th wedding anniversary. When we arrived we walked into a fabulously decorated area. No line of tinsel and an odd bauble here. As they knew this was a 40th anniversary they had arranged a special area for our party out of the normal restaurant area so after the meal we could sit in front of a roaring fire - which they had "reserved" for us.

This was the first indication of the quality of care that this establishment gives to their customers. The service was flawless, wine glasses filled without you realising, and the waiter once told about the designated driver ensured her glass of water was also topped up frequently. The food portions were generous and as much care went into the presentation as to the food preparation, it was almost a shame to eat it. The wine quality (based on the waiters recommendation) very good. Finally the food - my mouth waters still just thinking about it. The lamb shanks (the inn speciality) were the best I've ever had.

The price for 5 of us, with coffees and after dinner drinks was cheaper than an average meal for 2 in a London restaurant. At no time were we rushed and it was a wonderful evening that my parents are still talking about to everyone they meet. This will soon be a place that you will need to book well in advance ... so go now you won't regret this.
