Palmiro Description

Manchester is not exactly blessed with good quality Italian restaurants, most of them have still not managed to drag themselves out of the 1970s Trattoria era; however, Palmiro, owned by Venetian Stefano Bagnoli and his wife Julie, is thoroughly up to date, and produces interesting food as well as boasting an excellent wine list at sensible prices.

Starters could have seared pigeon breast on fruit polenta; slow-roasted tomato risotto or monkfish spiedini and chilli salsa rossa on offer, followed by fish bollito misto and pear pumpkin salad; chargrilled seabass with salmorglio sauce or rabbit with baby onions in agrodolce. Finishing with venetian rice budino with roast plum or poached pear on polenta with caramel net.

Your Reviews of Palmiro

Paul (3 July 2008)

Their food, choices, service and value are all excellent, especially the early bird two courses for £12!. Once again we left highly satisfied.

Bernie (25 November 2007)

God, I wish I'd seen these reviews before I went! I assumed that a restaurant with a Michelin bib and named one of the top ten Italian restaurants in the whole of the UK by The Independent and The Times would have been half right. How wrong I was. The fact that it was three fourth empty on a Saturday night should have given me the clue. Front of house was a Polish girl who couldn't speak English. Despite the fact that it was empty, my wife and I had to share a menu. The risotto came straight out of the microwave. My pasta was soggy and overcooked as was the sea bass main course. We asked for the bill and tried to do one ASAP, but were prevented from doing so because even the bill took twenty minutes to arrive, which was the first time we saw the owner although his wife seemed to be having a great time ignoring the customers at the bar. The décor was awful - it looked like they were in the middle of decorating and the central heating was obviously also decommissioned at the time. Whatever you do, please don’t go there.

When one of the country's most respected and leading critics says that a restaurant in this group is 'the best Italian Restaurant outside London' it is time to take them seriously. Britain's love ...
