Pant Yr Ochan Description
A typical Welsh manor house with lovely views and plenty of historical features. The list of awards reads like a roll of honour, which indeed it is. Pant yr Ochain is clearly a popular destination, particularly with families, and helpings are legendary.
Head Chef Jonathan Barkley is described as a Chef's chef and certainly produces the goods. For a starter the rillettes of salmon and smoked trout, served with warm toast and lemon oil could hardly be bettered, though the spiced chick pea and coriander cakes with a roast pepper salad and coriander yoghurt dressing are in the same class.
10 oz Welsh black rump steak comes with a plum tomato and red onion salad, pesto butter and unashamed fries, but you might be equally tempted by the poached fillet of salmon on a Greek salad with buttered new potatoes. Lighter main courses, such as smoked haddock and salmon fishcakes with a salad made from tomatoes and spring onions, are also listed.
Amongst the various mouth-watering puddings many will want to home in on the morello cherry and frangipan tart with a berry compote. The wine list features a good range of bins under £20 with house wine at £10.50.

Heaven on earth is how I would describe this shrine to fabulous food, real ales and world class atmosphere. Never have I been to a place I have enjoyed so much. Please don't let it get "discovered".
Nick Holland (28 June 2004)
Okay, I may be a bit biased as this is my local and my favourite pub in the area and the food is generally outstanding. The 'Pant' is an old country house with all the charm you'd expect, the beer is good, with regulars such as Timothy Taylors Landlord, and local brews such as Plassey. There are always four or five real ales available, and the range of Whiskies caters for even the most discerning of tastes. The food is also very good, but as with all places with a reputation book to avoid disappointment. The Pant is best enjoyed on a sunny summer’s afternoon in its huge beer garden with a jug of the Landlords, or bottle Chilean Red. For the winter visitor the fire's are always well stocked with big logs.
My partner and recently visited again for one of our lazy Sunday evenings and enjoyed the Tomato and Oregano soup, the Chicken terrine with red onion marmalade, followed by the Welsh black rump steak with tarragon butter and leg of lamb in a garlic and mint gravy. The meal went down really well as usual and we relaxed in the evening sun with another bottle of house red.
Well worth a visit if you are near, and if not travel to find it!
