Peat Inn Description
One of the strongholds of Scottish cuisine is located in this unpretentious and warm-hearted house, formerly the creation for many years until 2006 of David and Patricia Wilson along with their family, it has now been taken over by Geoffrey Smeddle, who was the Executive Chef for Conran Restaurants and helped to set up the renowned étain in Glasgow. He has continued the fine tradition that they established there.
He and his wife happily share The Peat Inn with their delightful staff and many friends. One always has the feeling it is rather like a boat that has achieved the plane and sails effortlessly along with a touch on the tiller as required. You get the feeling that they genuinely look on their clients as much more than mere guests.
The truth is somewhat different as an amalgam of organisational, cooking, management and people skills is deployed to present this compelling spot. I can think of few places where I would prefer to eat or stay. Dishes draw heavily on the best of what is locally available in terms of game, fish, vegetables and even truffles. The cooking is classically based upon French cuisine, with the emphasis always on flavour.
Over 400 wine bins await your pleasure at prices which reflect a love of wine rather than the balance at the Bank.
Dishes on offer could include ballotine of rabbit and sweetbreads; warm salad of Anstruther lobster with lime and vanilla; daube of beef with parsnip puree and glazed onions; wild sea bass with oxtail, salsify and horseradish velouté. Desserts might include: delice of Amadei chocolate with Earl Grey Tea ice cream; warm hazelnut fondant with espresso ice cream; blood orange mousse with pink grapefruit sorbet or iced banana parfait with dark chocolate mousse.
The Website also contains details about the eight beautifully appointed suites for overnight guests, all decorated in totally individual fashion. No motel style accommodation there!
The Scotsman - Gillian Glover, April 2002:
"It glows in the dining folklore of Scotland like a golden plate set on a plastic tablecloth. A place of foody pilgrimage. I had heard about the Peat Inn almost as soon as I grasped a fork in my chubby fist (I was a bit slow with cutlery)."

Your Reviews of Peat Inn
Alan Stuart (30 May 2008)
As a regular customer throughout David Wilson's era, I was somewhat nervous about what would happen when he handed over the reins. These fears have proven groundless as the Smeddles have managed to preserve all the ingredients that made this place so successful and also add their own touches to our local favourite. The philosophy of The Peat Inn was always based on the classic French country inn with rooms and that continues today. Our latest meal was as good as any we have enjoyed over the last thirty years - the highlight being the pork main course with fillet, daube of cheek and black pudding, which would have enhanced the menu of its best French cousins. The wine list, although reduced, is just as exciting as ever with some real value if you look. East Fife is blessed with a real treasure trove of really good restaurants and The Peat Inn is still a jewel in the crown. The only problem is who's going to drive home!
David Adam (16 July 2007)
This is one of the only restaurants my wife and I constantly return to year after year. I can think of nothing better than spending a long evening enjoying the tasting menu. It is the whole experience that does it for me, starting with the aperitif and amuses-bouche by the log-fire, followed by the tasting menu then back to the room with a small whisky. I would definitely recommend staying in one of the rooms which enables you to fully enjoy the wine and of course stay for lunch the next day.
