Peking Restaurant Description

Close to the Grafton Centre with its cinema and interesting range of shops the Peking enjoys a good reputation in Cambridge and has been described as the best Chinese in the city. Whether or not this has anything to do with their prices is debatable, and some would argue that for the quality and extent of the food the prices are fair. The cuisine is primarily Sichuan. This comes from the western, and wetter, part of China unlike the Cantonese with which most of us are more familiar. Spices abound, plates are large and it is probably not a good idea to go there without an appetite. Good Chinese beer supplements a fairly perfunctory wine list.

Fixed Dinner

  • £17 to £25 per person (min 2 people)

Your Reviews of Peking Restaurant

Tim Phillips (28 July 2005)

We (my wife and I, daughter-in-law, son, son's girlfriend, daughter, mother etc...) cannot recommend the Peking highly enough; and I don't mean we all went there once for one special meal. We (my wife and I) have been going there regularly for years and if any of the family are lucky enough to be around when we go, they jump at the chance.

If you want to know what real cooking of real food by real people for real people is all about, go to the Peking - and I mean any type of food.

Ingredient sourcing is second to none yet I challenge anyone to make some of the signature dishes at home for much less than what you pay at the Peking.

Hunan Prawns - a mountain of very large crustacea cooked to absolute perfection with a small amount of piquant yet light sauce laced with black beans, fresh ginger and spring onions and a quantity of whole chillis (not really for eating) that must make up half the cost of the dish - yet the spicing is a delicious, prickly heat; not at all overpowering - a complete contrast to any other version of the dish I have ever tasted, and that includes restaurants in both Newcastle's and London's Chinatowns.

This would be too dry on its own, and is best mixed with another dish with more sauce. Staff and/or proprietors will gladly recommend and are never wrong.

Portions are generous, to say the least; one main dish per person is easily sufficient so, assuming there are two of you, you should probably pick dishes that you both like.

Alternatively, over-order and take it away with you - you will not be disappointed.

Crispy Beef - yes, it is actually crispy, not chewy, with melt-in-the-mouth beef inside!

Oh, one other thing; we think 'seaweed' should be the test of a real Chinese restaurant; order it at the Peking and compare it with the same dish at any other - this will give you a clue as to the amazingly high standards at the Peking. No green grease on the plate when you have finished (in fact, no grease at all).
