Perkins Restaurant & Bar
Station Road, Plumtree, nr West Bridgford, NG12 5NA
An idyllic setting in an old village railway station paired with consistently excellent modern British cooking make this a popular venue for Nottingham locals and beyond. Warm and genuine service keeps a loyal base of customers coming back week after week. Started in 1982 by Tony and Wendy Perkins the place has prospered, which speaks for itself; over the intervening period, Perkins has gained a reputation for food and service excellence, supported by all the top guides. In fact Perkins has been voted the Midlands restaurant of the year by the readers of the Which? Good Food Guide for 2007 and 2008. There is a small bar where orders are taken from the blackboard menu which offers a surprisingly sophisticated range. They do a speedy two-course lunch, with two choices per course, shall we say salt beef hash topped with fried egg and capers or fillet of home-smoked salmon with creamed leeks and sauté potatoes? The mid-week fixed-price dinner is well-priced. Perkins now boasts their own smokehouse, dishes from which appear regularly on the menu, and really epitomise what Perkins is about - good, solid local ingredients, well executed.
House wines come in at £13.95 and similarly comfortably-priced wines from a short list are also on offer. Would that the country had more of these simple, unpretentious, but thoroughly good places where ordinary people can eat well and reasonably often.

REVIEWS OF Perkins Restaurant & Bar
Dave Bennett (12 March 2010)
I was surprised to read the previous review for Perkins, although I do note it was quite a while back. I took my wife for the Sunday roast last week on our wedding anniversary, and the meal was excellent. I agree it is not necessarily the cheapest restaurant in Nottingham, but I think that cost is justified by the slick service and nice surroundings. Perkins has been given a total make-over since our last visit. We both had kedgeree as a starter, then traditional roast beef - both were great. Also, the drinks menu is really cool and I had the nicest bottle of wine I've had in ages!
I Keep Trying (18 January 2009)
We had Sunday lunch there a few weeks ago and, for the price, we were less than impressed. We've eaten in several Michelin starred restaurants so we know what standards are like or what they ought to be. Wherever possible, we always try to go Bib Gourmand as a minimum. We can see and appreciate how value is added to food by a decent chef and we don't mind paying for that value, that's why we eat out. Having read that Perkins had won the Midlands restaurant of the year award for the second year running we thought we would give it a go. The food wasn't bad, per se, but some of it was stone cold. The vegetables had been heated far too long and were dry on the outside and exhausted on the inside. The crackling was excellent. The Yorkshire pudding was, to be fair, dismal. Dry stodge at the bottom and dust dry at the top - the hallmarks, in my opinion, of being reheated in the oven. It takes less than 5 minutes to make a decent Yorkshire pudding but evidently we hadn't paid for that particular 5 minutes and had to make do with a reheated pudding.
Courses were oddly paced, too, with the wait for someone to take our order coming in at about 15 minutes but the wait for our dessert order taking both of us by surprise, with the waitress appearing out of nowhere within about 2 minutes of the table being cleared. All in, with drinks, we spent about £60 for Sunday lunch for two. We feel that we were served over priced pub grub, which ought to have cost about a tenner, tops. We've both had better food at one of those all-you-can-eat-for-a-tenner buffets. We'll give it one more go, they might have been having a bad day, so might we, but how is it possible, at that price, to get a basic Sunday lunch wrong and leave punters feeling short changed?
