Phoenix, The Description
It says much for the influence of Chinese cuisine that there should be at least two Chinese restaurants of such quality as Phoenix in Cambridgeshire villages. This pub conversion in Histon, marked by two protective lions at the door, otherwise virtually indistinguishable from its previous purpose, specialises in Peking and Szechuan cuisine.
This is serious Chinese food, served precisely, with no great overburden of charm, in surroundings that are elegantly restrained and furnished. Dishes that particularly come to mind are the Cantonese roast pork, braised with honey and barbecue sauce, the traditional but never-failing crispy duck and the toffee bananas.
Phoenix is well worth making the detour to find and with its pleasant village-green setting makes a pleasant combination of cultures.

If it wasn't for the lions at the door, and the immaculate upkeep of the frontage, it would be easy to dismiss the Pheonix as another Histon pub - after all there are 5 others to choose from in this village just north of the A14 past Cambridge.
Inside, the Pheonix is an instant welcome. The building was converted from a pub, and the front (smoking) section retains the best of a pub feel, as well as giving beautiful views at the ducks in the brook opposite. A cruel irony, when tucking in to your aromatic crispy version, which I would say is a must. If you prefer, you can swap the intimacy of the front room for the 'high class marquee' feel of the much larger (and smoke-free) back room, where parties can be comfortably catered for in long tables or in the enjoyable Chinese banquet format around a huge round table.
The food is great - probably the best Chinese food in Cambridge, as confirmed by Chinese friends. And the service is warm and welcoming, something not reliably found in Chinese restaurants. Yes it is expensive, but for any occasion (and any excuse will do) it is well worth it.
