Phoenix, The Description

It says much for the influence of Chinese cuisine that there should be at least two Chinese restaurants of such quality as Phoenix in Cambridgeshire villages. This pub conversion in Histon, marked by two protective lions at the door, otherwise virtually indistinguishable from its previous purpose, specialises in Peking and Szechuan cuisine.

This is serious Chinese food, served precisely, with no great overburden of charm, in surroundings that are elegantly restrained and furnished. Dishes that particularly come to mind are the Cantonese roast pork, braised with honey and barbecue sauce, the traditional but never-failing crispy duck and the toffee bananas.

Phoenix is well worth making the detour to find and with its pleasant village-green setting makes a pleasant combination of cultures.

I have been using the Phoenix regularly for the past twenty years and I can honestly say that the food just gets better. The atmosphere and staff are just great. Anything really good is not cheap but this is really well worth trying. I highly recommend the lobster with ginger and spring onions.

We booked a table for three people at 7.30pm. When we arrived we were shown to a table near the front door in a very busy and draughty position. There were approximately six empty tables in this section, so we asked if we could have one of those instead. The waitress said no, because the restaurant was fully booked. We pointed out the empty tables, but the waitress said they were booked. We then spoke to a supervisor and the manager, who both refused to let us have a different table. So we left, and we won't be going back.
