Pipe of Port, The Description
A great deal of thought has gone into the designing of The Pipe of Port on High Street. In an age when things change at a rapid pace, a restaurant like this is a timely reminder to slow things down a bit and revel in traditional elegance. The crusty Dickensian wine bar with saw dust covered floors and mahogany tables bear testament to this.
The menu goes out of its way to accommodate both classic and contemporary tastes, so whilst some may be fascinated by a chicken with curried mayonnaise and yoghurt, others may be impressed with a smoked Scottish salmon with lemon and cucumber. Daily set specials supplement the list of choices on the available menu and those who like their steak stuffed in a pastry will be happy to see mushroom Duxelle and dauphinoise potatoes hemmed in as well, with a serving of whiskey pepper sauce to accompany.
Amongst the wine list expect to find some great bottles of port dating back to many decades.
Your Reviews of Pipe of Port, The

The restaurant is set in old cellars. There are a number of small ‘rooms’ off the bar, several booths and a low ceiling, not to mention the flagstone flooring covered in sawdust, which gives the place a great atmosphere. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the food, king prawns in garlic butter and asparagus for starters, rump of lamb and fish pie mains plus a shared cheese plate, washed down with a bottle of house claret. We enjoyed very pleasant and efficient service from the maitre'd and all the waitresses. We would go back regularly if only Southend wasn't eighty miles from where we live.

Always wonderful, fresh, homemade food, always happy to accommodate requests, friendly staff. Fantastic wines (and OF COURSE, PORT!), all round 'lovely', in a quirky setting reminiscent of a Dickens novel and definitely worthy of such. Have recommended several times and look forward to my next visit. I think good value for the quality. Nice also that you can book a little booth when you want more privacy.
