Pizza Express - Northampton

Pizza Express remains a hugely popular bedrock of casual eating. Its popularity is testimony to the fact that across the country, they have restaurants where you will always be guaranteed a good nosh, with children's tastes being well catered for. Pizza Express has gone even more Roman, and following the success of that particular example of listening to their public have introduced Romana pizzas, including the scorching Etna and the hearty Siciliana. These pizzas are now thinner, bigger and crispier, and if that sounds like a marketing line, it is. However, unlike many such lines, this one is true, and their quality is always consistent, though cleverly they have still managed to retain a homemade feel to their pizzas.Pizza Express remains a hugely popular bedrock of casual eating. As an alternative to pizza, try their pollo pesto - cavatappi pasta with torn chicken breast, mushrooms, red onions and mozzarella in a creamy gruyere, parmesan and pesto sauce and finished with grana padano - or the niçoise salad with mixed leaves, yellowfin tuna, free range egg, green beans, potatoes and tomatoes with olives, anchovies, capers and house dressing.
Many of the big chains have come a long way, and Pizza Express is certainly amongst them. One of the first to be quoted on the Stock Exchange - in 1993 - Pizza Express is not a franchise operation and retains tight control through its own staff.
Their wine list - though short - contains some surprisingly good offerings, especially their intense Australian Chardonnay, and a big, full-bodied Merlot from Cusumano, Sicilia.

REVIEWS OF Pizza Express - Northampton
Sophie (2 October 2007)
Pizza Express is one of my favourite restaurants and have eaten at various branches for birthdays, anniversaries etc throughout the country. On arrival at the Northampton Pizza Express, we were not welcomed by the staff who were cleaning glasses and talking amongst themselves, completely ignoring any customers walking into the restaurant. After much disturbance, we were eventually seated opposite the open cooking area where staff continued to gossip.
My boyfriend ordered a Fanta, which came in a wine glass, completely flat, and the house white wine that I ordered was served warm. After around forty minutes of waiting, we finally received our food which, with all due credit to the chef- was excellent. For dessert we ordered a sundae and a banoffee pie (ordered with mascarpone - came with ice cream) and left with no words from any staff regarding a thank you or have a good night.
And no, we didn't leave a tip. Overall, as you may gather we were not impressed at all with this particular Pizza Express and will not return, although others, such as the one in Milton Keynes has fantastic service.
Family of three, one under 2. (5 June 2006)
Modern stylish pizzeria, generally friendly and helpful staff, pleasant and inexpensive, enjoy taking the family, in small or larger groups. Would team nicely with a trip to the theatre which is just round the corner.... one day when the baby has grown.
