Pont de la Tour, Le Description

pont de la tourLe Pont de la Tour is a highly regarded London restaurant and given that its food is said to reassure and comfort, it is perhaps understandable that it was the choice for Tony Blair when he entertained Bill Clinton in 1997. Dress code is smart in the restaurant, casual elsewhere. The enjoyment of the experience is greatly enhanced by the superb views of Tower Bridge, particularly from the terrace.

Their outstanding Modern European cuisine with French and Mediterranean influences from Head Chef, Lee Bennett, and high standards of professional service certainly underline a feeling of confidence. Le Pont de la Tour's menu changes seasonally and they now offer a fixed price à la carte priced at £39.50 for three courses. A meal there could begin with a choice of celeriac soup, terrine of foie gras with spiced pear compote, Colchester lobster bisque, classic steak tartare, smoked haddock risotto with curry roasted prawns, half a dozen West Mersea rock oysters, or a seafood platter for two to share.

On to main dishes, some of which may derive from French cuisine but have more than a whiff of the English influence about them. From the sea a pave of salmon with a warm salad of beetroot, potato and dandelion, a whole grilled Dover sole, or that king of dishes a grilled lobster, delicately enhanced with garlic and herbs, and finished with sauce béarnaise. Roasted Wiltshire pork chop is served with pear and potato puree and black pudding, an English label chicken has braised cabbage and morel sauce for company. One of the great treats for carnivores is a fillet of veal Rossini, possibly eclipsed only by the Chateaubriand for two with pommes paille.

They also offer an extremely imaginative vegetarian menu, and at lunchtime their prix fixe represents excellent value for money with two courses at £20, three for £25.  The little ones are not forgotten and are welcomed with their own menu with a mighty three courses at £10. Fast becoming the ultimate Sunday Lunch destination for family get togethers and a post-prandial stroll after Lee's traditional Roast Beef with all the trimmings which starts at an incredibly priced £21.50 for two courses.

Le Pont de la Tour has recently announced the introduction of their Table in the Cellar. This semi-private dining table is situated in the wine cellar, and gives guests the opportunity to dine amongst Grand Crus and vintage Champagnes. It can accommodate up to 10 guests, or 22 over two tables, and is probably one of the most unique dining tables in London. Their other private dining room, Le Salon Privé, is available for up to 20 people.

The wine list at Le Pont de la Tour is considered to be among the best in London. For simpler food the more informal Bar & Grill serves an excellent choice of brasserie classics with wonderful crustacea. It also has outdoor seating and a pianist every evening and Sunday lunchtime.

A pleasant temptation is the Foodstore, an absolute haven for foodies stocking everything from cheeses, charcuterie, patés and freshly baked bread to everyday ingredients such as olive oils and pasta. They will also make up bespoke hampers to order. Could solve a gift problem or two? For a similar approach to wine arrange to see Nicolas Clerc at their extensive cellar - no wonder they have such a wonderful selection for restaurant use.

Your Reviews of Pont de la Tour, Le

Christian (19 May 2009)

I was taken by my wife to Le Pont de la Tour for my birthday. I have not been back to Pont since it has been in the hands of D and D London and I have to admit it's even better than the Conran days! Of course the fabulous view has not changed and the room looks similar as I remembered - muted colours, refined elegance, and soft, springy carpet but the food has definitely raised its game. To start I had the terrine of poached beef shin with apple puree. The dish was perfectly balanced with the apple cutting through the rich, meaty mouthfuls. To follow my wife and I shared the Chateaubriand for two. It was the best piece of beef fillet I have ever eaten. Still pink as requested, the meat melted in your mouth and you could have cut it with a spoon. Determined to have a pudding although I was fit to burst we both opted for the mocha crème brûlée. The sugar certainly had enough snap for when I delved in, it nearly shattered on to the next table! It was a thoroughly memorable meal and I wish I had not waited so long to go back.
