Porthgwidden Cafe Description

A favourite with surfers, holidaymakers, anybody who wants a relatively quiet beach with a great bite to eat and refreshment at hand. This little secluded sister of the well known Porthminster Beach Cafe, Porthgwidden is a real treat for anyone who wants to escape the St Ives hustle and bustle, with quality service and food, all located in a little bit of St Ives that commands awesome uninterrupted views towards Godrivey lighthouse. A notably Moroccan feel sets the tone, the rest comes from the wall to wall sunshine and the cheerful informality of the place.

Ryan Venning and Tamara Schallhorn are the two leading the Cafe, where Ryan is putting his all into creating simple, affordable dishes with a stamp of class, Tamara's personality and warmness shines through. Lunch is somewhat eclectic and ranges across various cuisines, but the food is approachable on all levels from a simple 100% Cornish burger or local haddock in the fish and chips to a crispy fried squid with citrus miso dressing and crispy shallots.

A specials blackboard takes particular advantage of the local fish, whilst many herbs and vegetables are sourced directly from Porthminster Beach Cafe's garden on the other side of the harbour.

At the end try their freshly cooked waffle with a selection of toppings, a great favourite of the house, then shut your eyes, listen to the surf and think of the Caribbean. A small but attractive wine list meets most eventualities and there is Mexican, Spanish and Portuguese beer in the icebox.

C North (23 September 2007)

Good food and well cooked, the staff couldn't have been friendlier. Take a jumper and eat outside. Enjoy the view and the food the way it should be cooked.
