Potiniere, La Description

La Potiniere has a style all its own, and that includes the clientele, described by Gareth McLean in The Guardian as "bonkers". Whilst reasonably sure this was said with affection, it is an interesting observation and appears to bear some association with "old and posh" citizens of nearby Edinburgh. Knowing both locations well I have absolutely no quarrel with that, in fact have made a note to eat there during the next foray to Celtic parts. The list of Awards on their website, and in view of the above comments I was slightly surprised they had one, is impressive beyond the call of duty.

After an interregnum following the departure of David and Hilary Brown, new owners in the form of Mary Runciman and Keith Marley took over in 2004 and the word on Princes Street is that not much has changed. Menu choices are not expansive, but they don't have to be. A typical menu might offer a warm Parmesan custard, served with rocket leaves, slow cooked baby plum tomatoes and basil pesto, duck, fois gras and Argmanac parfait, or Thai coconut soup with scallops.

A main course of roast fillet of Scotch beef could well plumb new heights of enjoyment, or, given the Scots way with fish, do not lightly dismiss the grilled Dover sole served on a smoked salmon and cucumber risotto. Or have both and join the Edinburgh eccentrics.

The warm chocolate pudding is served with a pineapple compote, vanilla sauce and amaretto ice cream and is followed by a cheese plate, perhaps with some of those wonderfully little known Scottish cheeses, such as Dunsyre or Lanark Blue. A small, discrete and pleasure-packed wine list completes the picture, apart from acknowledging the quality of the staff who, like everything else, are immaculate in all that they do.

Your Reviews of Potiniere, La

Steve H (14 April 2007)

"La Potiniere and Friends" is a rather iconic cook book for me but alas David and Hilary Brown had left by the time we were able to make it up to East Lothian (we're from Herts). So, we passed it by for a few years until realising that the word-on-the-street was that the place was as good, and possibly better, than before under new owners Keith Marley and Mary Runciman. Buoyed up by this news, we arranged a lunch-time visit April 2007 when up on holiday with the kids. We 'phoned in advance and were made to feel extremely welcome with children, to the extent that we were contacted in advance with menu details to check that the kids would be OK with the food. Excellent.

Luncheon day duly arrived and this is merely to record that the food was spectacular, and really quite astonishing when the price is taken into account (a measly £20 for 3 courses with coffee). A carrot and ginger mousse with carrot sorbet was subtle and well-balanced. Roast guinea-fowl was black-truffled and morelled to take the dish beyond the ordinary. A rhubarb tart with sorbet was easily the best expression of this plant we'd yet come across. The kids loved it as well, service was attentive, and we were made to feel most welcome. The last restaurant we'd eaten at was The Fat Duck and we're delighted to say that we enjoyed our time at La Potiniere equally as much. It doesn't aspire to the three-starred high table of gastronomy like the Bray establishment but, for fine dining at a reasonable price, we've never had better in the UK. We will be returning...again and again I suspect.
