Potting Shed, The Description
In 1787 a gent by the name of Thomas Lord built a cricket ground in Dorset Square. Twenty seven years later it was moved to the present Lord's, to be replaced by some very fine trees and even finer houses, one of which is the Dorset Hotel, wherein lies The Potting Shed Restaurant and Bar.
Those looking for terracotta pots, seed boxes, sea grass matting, hand-painted murals and tables bearing colourful small pots will not go empty away - they are there in great abundance. So too is a menu of inspiring and interesting dishes, more like what used to be - and still is in some cases - on offer in traditional brasseries, but certainly not hotel dining rooms where Brown Windsor Soup boiled beef and two veg, rounding off with semolina pudding used to be the order of the day.
Think dressed crab with cumin and avocado dressing, cured ham with melon and candied figs, grilled red mullet with lemon couscous, black olives and tomato, or Cumberland sausage with a mash of leek and bacon, nicely rounded off with traditional cherry Bakewell tart and clotted cream, or a pear and rhubarb crumble with vanilla ice cream.
One critic remarked that despite all this it had failed to shake off the hotel aura - this writer is not convinced that is fair and prefers to give the benefit of the doubt - if any.
