Prickly Pear Restaurant
5-7 The Side, Quayside, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, NE1 3JE
Not so very long ago eating out in Newcastle upon Tyne was a hazardous affair in almost every aspect. The last ten years especially have seen a major change that has followed the regeneration of the city, in particular the waterfront area where it is now possible to eat well and safely. Typical of this movement is Prickly Pear, said to be the haunt of the rich and famous, who must love being able to blend in with the rest of us under assumed anonymity. If the atmosphere and general buzz level was not enough to tempt anybody, try the food which is what I would call modern but recognisable, more than can be said for some modern food on the plate. In fact it's of a very high standard, and little surprise that they are members of the Gourmet Society. Not so very long ago eating out in Newcastle upon Tyne was a hazardous affair in almost every aspect. Starters of crab cake, crab cocktail and avocado sorbet, or green asparagus, orange, quail and almond butter emulsion are likely to lead to heightened speculation about what is to follow. How about corn feed poussin poached in thyme and lemon grass, sweet corn cake and spring vegetables, or John Dory and squid a la plancha?
Prickly Pear has distinguished siblings in Castle Eden and Sunderland and owners David and Jane Kilburn clearly know what they are about.

REVIEWS OF Prickly Pear Restaurant
Janet McNulty (29 September 2008)
My friend and I were in Newcastle for a theatre weekend on Saturday. It’s been many years since we had been to Newcastle and had no idea about where to eat. We found the Prickly Pear as we were walking from the theatre to the Quays area. The menu looked interesting so we decided to give it a go on our return. We discovered that we had read the menu incorrectly and the menu we wanted to choose from was not available on Saturday evenings. The gentleman who seemed to be the manager had a word with the kitchen staff and very kindly agreed that we could eat off that menu. Our meal can only be described as fabulous. We both had the same meal of fishcakes, salmon and sorbet. All courses were beautifully presented and the tastes were exquisite. The salmon was the best cooked piece of fish I have had in a restaurant for many years and it just melted in the mouth. The members of staff were very pleasant and the service was excellent and efficient without feeling rushed. The restaurant was fairly quiet as we were there pre-performance. I can't praise this restaurant more highly and will definitely go there again when on our next visit to Newcastle.

We ate at Prickly Pear Restaurant at Castle Eden on a Saturday night for the first time and it was absolutely marvellous. The staff were great, food delicious and the place was tastefully done up. They do an early bird menu during the week, which is good value for money. We will be trying that for sure.
