Prince Bonaparte, The Description

The legendary Notting Hill drinking den The Prince Bonaparte first came to fame in the mid-90s and a decade of fabulous parties meant it was time for a little R&R and a good make-over.

Bonaparte's eclectic mix of classic London boozer and Regency finery is bound to draw a crowd, from Notting Hill's ladies-who-lunch to the more arty down-to-earth crowd. Famously Stella McCartney's old local, the new look is already proving a hit with other locals such as Danni Minogue.

On entrance the open-plan layout of the bar area and the large windows overlooking Chepstow Road - perfect for watching the Notting Hill Carnival procession - create a bright and airy zone, as enhanced by the interior's soft shades of brown and cream.

In keeping with the traditional design of the pub, the horse-shoe shaped wood-panelled bar, plus wooden tables, chairs and floors, lends a homely feel while the striped Regency-style sofas and upholstered armchairs are almost palatial. New lighting - from glittering chandeliers worthy of a regency ball to subtle spotlights and candles - is a welcome addition.

Towards the back of the pub is a space to rival that of any modern art gallery. Works by local artists (currently a selection of bold animal prints) adorn the stark black walls and customers are invited to kick back and relax on red velvet chaise-longues, leather banquettes, and gorgeous sofas. The wooden floors are softened with the use of a collection of tapestry rugs.

The Prince Bonaparte now boasts an extensive range of cask ales and specialist beers to rival that of any pub the local area. The wine list offers many new and old world specialities by the glass and the specialist cocktail menu is not to be missed.

The open-plan kitchen serves a variety of light snacks such as wedges with sweet chilli mayonnaise and olives, feta and ciabatta with balsamic vinegar and olive oil plus more substantial dishes such as sea bass with hot lemon oil, new potatoes, green beans and mange tout and rare Thai beef salad.

Your Reviews of Prince Bonaparte, The

Michael (25 August 2007)

The service in that place was awful. The waitresses were a law on to themselves. I understand that was not the case in the past. I was part of a party of ten people. One of us actually went to the trouble of writing down the order and giving it to one of the waitresses. About half an hour later only eight meals were served. When asked about the other two the waitress who took the order blamed another waitress. When a firm complaint was made to her (which was not in the least aggressive) we suffered an OTT rude reaction. After a further half hour of waiting, the manager, eventually held his hands up and agreed to take a significant sum off the bill. The food when it arrived was ok and reasonably priced. The service, however, has let this place down so much.
