Punjab Restaurant, The
80 Neal Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2H 9PA
The Punjab Restaurant was originally opened in 1947 as London's premier dining destination for Punjabi food and has been run by three generations of the Singh Maan family ever since. There's such nostalgia and charm that envelops this whole operation on Neal Street that it's hard not to revisit. The quality remains high and dishes are all strictly from the Punjab region including favourites such as jalfrezi and tandoori. However, there are plenty of more unusual options here that are well worth a try including the anari murg, a sweet and sour pomegranate flavoured chicken or acharri gosht, a picked lamb dish that tastes better than it sounds. Among the vegetarian fare, grandad's secret recipe of kali dal or curried black lentils gets thumbs up from almost everybody and select from an assortment of flatbreads like chilli naan, stuffed parathas, kulcha or rotis to accompany your curry. The Punjab Restaurant was originally opened in 1947 as London's premier dining destination for Punjabi food and has been run by three generations of the Singh Maan family ever since. REVIEWS OF Punjab Restaurant, The
Vik Singh (21 October 2011)
The best Punjabi restaurant I have eaten at. Being north Indian myself, I know what good food is. I've also eaten at the majority of Indian restaurants in London, but this is by far my favourite one. Being a veggie, there is a good selection of veggie food - the Saag Paneer and Kali Daal along with the Lucha Parantha are brilliant and perfectly authentic. The staff are all very friendly. The service is fast and all in all, this is the best Indian restaurant that London has to offer.
Graham (1 April 2008)
I have eaten in lots of Indian restaurants in London, and for this level of style and price, I think it is very good. The decor and service is average but I found the food to be some of the best I have tasted. My wife always likes butter chicken and I always find it the least appealing on the menu but there it is really tasty. My lamb dish was well cooked and the bread was fresh. If you fancy a curry in Covent Garden, give it a go.
