Queen's Head, The Description

queen's head loughboroughThis handsome former alehouse has re-emerged as a well-run and welcoming gastropub within easy distance of Loughborough. Former habitués would hardly recognise the old place, with its smart to the point of chic furnishings, cool décor, altogether the sort of place that would fit in well to a metropolitan scene.

Head Chef David Ferguson has a firm grip on the culinary front with menus that excite the taste buds and draw from a generous span. He has clearly got off to an excellent start by retaining the award of two Rosettes by the AA in 2009.

The menu offers seven starters and eight main courses, alongside a varied and exciting list of lite bites and pub classics. Start with a pressed terrine of local game, roasted pears and walnuts, pumpkin soup with nutmeg crème fraîche or smoked salmon and prawn timbale with red pepper coulis.

Loughborough may not be exactly 'sur mer', but the fish is beautifully fresh and the fillet of sea bass, crushed new potatoes, crayfish vanilla and saffron sauce makes an attractive combination. The haunch of venison with pistachio crust, violet potato dumplings is the sort of dish that restores confidence after a hard day.

Amongst the puddings look out for orange trifle with shortbread biscuits and lemon tart with lemon sorbet, and guests are seldom surprised to find well kept local Colston Basset Stilton available - perfect with a glass of Cockburn's Ruby port.

The keenly priced set menu and bar snacks list, both complement the main menu, displaying a shrewd understanding of the requirements of the local market and customer base.

From time to time special meals are staged, one of the most recent being Seven Days at The Queen's Head, which might encompass three courses for the set menu and a bottle of wine on Monday through to a fish and chip night on Thursday and a family friendly day on Sunday. A punchy wine list displays a good range of choices and an awareness of the current trends in taste, with 19 or so by the glass. Prices accommodate all wallets sensibly.

The Queen's Head earned a Silver Award in the East Midlands Enjoy Excellence Awards under the 'Best Pub Experience' category. If you would like to find out more a visit to their Website is the best place to start.

Your Reviews of Queen's Head, The

Amber (3 August 2007)

I have eaten at the Queen's Head, with my friends, three times in the last few months. It is located very near to where I live and therefore the choice of going to the Queen's Head was mainly due to convenience. Although overpriced in our estimation, the food was good on the first occasion but the same could not be said about the service. We had arrived there at 1:45pm and were told that we could still order food. At approximately 2:50pm, a waitress came over to our table. My friend had finished her meal and I was still eating. The waitress looked at me and asked if we had finished. It was obvious I had not and we both felt this was extremely rude on behalf of the waitress. It was clear that she was anxious to finish her duties and, some minutes later, we heard the restaurant manager informing her she could go home. She was not in the least bit, pleasant to us throughout the meal and the restaurant manager had the same attitude.

We visited the Queens Head for a second time today and my friends ordered a rib eye steak sandwich and the steak in both portions was full of grizzle. One of my friends was assured, prior to ordering, that the steak would be lean! However, I had no complaints about the seafood medley that I had ordered. The service, again, was very bad and the same waitress, referred to above, was quite aloof and unhelpful. We later overheard a couple complaining that they had difficulty getting a drink although it was only 2:50pm.

Considering the price of the meals, not only are they sub-standard but the service is dreadful and I will never dine at the Queens Head again. I have received better service in fast food restaurants. A smile goes a long way as does being pleasant and helpful which the others and I have not experienced at this establishment.

We have eaten here twice now and have loved it so much that we have chosen it for our wedding reception. The staff have always been wonderful, the atmosphere feels relaxed with a sophisticated edge and the food delicious.
