Rat Inn, The Description
The Rat Inn is a classic country pub serving excellent, locally sourced food with five real ales on tap, including ones from local breweries; there is also a beautifully positioned beer garden overlooking the Tyne Valley. Chef Phil Mason previously owned the Michelin rated Green Room restaurant in Hexham, guaranteeing a high level of quality for the food.
The blackboard menu changes daily, depending on what's available, but value for money is very decent also, with many main courses for under a tenner, including dishes such as braised beef in local ale with baby onions, red wine, buttered new potatoes; grilled sea bass with Provencal prawns, mushroom and rocket risotto or cottage pie with minted peas. No wonder that it is featured in both the Good Pub Guide and the Good Beer Guide.

We visited the place for the first time last weekend. The food was a real surprise - outstanding. We were staying at a nearby hotel on a golfing trip, and were really knocked out by the warm welcome, and the cosy atmosphere. They were really busy, but we had booked as we were a party of eight. Those who hadn’t booked had to wait for tables to become available. As a pub it is unspoilt. They have a good choice of ales, but the standard of the food on offer is what sets this place apart. The rib of beef for two was as good as you would get anywhere, and we eat in a lot of different places.

We had a really nice celebration there at the weekend. We were visiting the area and staying at a nearby hotel. The food was exceptional - a real surprise as we hadn't heard of the place on our last visit there. As good quality as you can get in pricier venues in London, which we usually eat. It's very unpretentious and the friendly staff seemed happy in their work, which we found really refreshing. Try their rib of beef for two.
