Raval Restaurant and Bar

Church Street, Gateshead Quays, Gateshead, NE8 2AT

Raval Luxury Restaurant and Bar, located on Gateshead Quays at the foot of the legendary Tyne Bridge, convincingly changes predefined notions about Indian food. The menu creates an inventive fusion of local produce with traditional Indian cooking methods and special spices. For starters, you could choose monkfish tikka, tender chunks of monkfish marinated in yogurt, mustard herb oil and special spices. The main course has a judicious selection of lamb, chicken and fish dishes of which achari chicken, breast meat with mixed pickle and whole spices, lamb pasanda, loin in a rich cashew nut, cardamom and saffron sauce, or sea bass Dakshini, cooked with coconut cream, cinnamon and curry leaf in a typical South Indian fashion prove to be worthy options.

Choices for vegetarians are few although the presence of unusual dishes, like eggplant lababdar, baby eggplants stuffed with cottage cheese in mustard seed and tomato sauce, make up for the lack of variety.

The desserts are imaginative with baby rose cream pudding or honey glazed jamun and pistachio ice cream topping the list. The lounge/bar has a decidedly contemporary atmosphere and serves exotic cocktails, fine wines and champagnes.

REVIEWS OF Raval Restaurant and Bar

Christopher (15 June 2011)

I am very pleased with the experience at Raval. Just popped in as I was staying in Newcastle on business. What a discovery - nestled just under the Tyne Bridge. Staff attentive, food delicious and delicately spiced and to enhance the experience, I could see it all being cooked through the window to the kitchen. Very reasonable for the quality of food. My client was happy, which topped the lot really. If you are looking for a good Indian food experience in Newcastle, I would highly recommend Raval.

Joanne (18 April 2011)

I went to Raval with my husband and 13-year-old daughter to celebrate my husband's new job. It was the first time we had been, but will be the first of many visits, if the service and attention to detail provided by the staff is anything to go by. The meal was fantastic, with the lamb in particular a revelation. The waiting staff allow you time to choose from the menu, and are not at all pushy. However, the maitre'd Avi ensures that you are kept happy and enjoying your experience at all times. Another impressive point to note, is the position of this restaurant, overlooking the Tyne Bridge and within walking distance of other major landmarks, including the Sage Gateshead, the Quayside, and for those feeling a little more energetic, Newcastle City Centre.
