Amongst starters there is terrine of smoked chicken stuffed with pistachio nuts, and sliced smoked salmon and prawns followed by steak Diane flamed in brandy and finished with a Dijon mustard, mushroom and cream sauce.

Ten out of ten! Six of us had lunch today including two children. All the adults are very widely travelled. If you want fancy decor, smart cutlery and 'sophisticated' service then don't go to the Red Lion. My son in law and I had an excellent pint of beer, we all had roast beef which was superb as were the vegetables. Five of us had puddings which were thoroughly enjoyed and the service was friendly and helpful. For me it was good honest food in informal surroundings. What else does one want?

We were given a very warm welcome while we relaxed on comfy leather sofas to peruse the menu. Average main course prices ranged from about £11 for a pasta dish to £16.50 for tournedo of fillet. A specials board was available with some additional choices.

We had absolutely no complaints about the quality of the food. Perhaps next time I would ask for my steak to be cooked "super-rare" as there seemed to be the usual nervousness when meeting a customer’s demand for a rare steak.

The waiting staff were extremely friendly and we both agreed that we would visit again. Three courses with two coffees each came to £31 per head which we thought was very good value for a very pleasant experience.
