Red Onion Description
Here at restaurant-guide.com we have a list of cuisines under which to define the restaurants about which we write. But when it came to Red Onion the list offered no inspiration to us whatsoever, so taking the easy way out we resorted to International, a definition with which the owner John Quigley, I suspect, might not entirely agree. In fact, he didn't and suggested that we add Modern British and Brasserie, widening the field somewhat. But how do you describe the cuisine of somebody who is capitalising on years of international travel as chef to, as they say, stars of stage and screen, combining them into one glorious self-indulgent presentation of ingredients, recipes, whimsies and inspired concoctions?
However, underlying it all is a menu that gives the general picture, with starters of, say, French onion soup, hot and sour seafood broth, and toasted cheese, seared squid with rocket, chilli and lime, or tiger prawn salad with mango. Main courses include coq au vin, five spiced duck with sweet potatoes, pak choi and shitake mushrooms, finnan haddie with poached egg and mornay sauce (go on, use your imagination), steak frites, or shepherd's pie and peas. What might be described as a signature dish is the red onion and mulled cheddar tart. For a salad try the aptly named tears of the tiger, hot spicy beef with mixed leaves.
Because they do these sort of things rather well in Scotland I would linger over the organic burger with tomato pickle and fresh cut fries rounded off with egg, bacon or cheese. Then there's the Cobb Salad - a boiled egg, Mull cheddar, red onion (of course), chicken, avocado, Ayrshire gammon, tomato and ranch dressing, a dish fit for a welcome from the Pipes. Puddings seem to fall back on more familiar sources. Perhaps stars of stage and screen did not survive that far into the meal, so it's familiar dishes such as sticky toffee pudding and custard, apple tarte tatin and vanilla ice cream, or lemon cheesecake with strawberries.

We ate here last Friday after a quick internet search. We were very early, at 4.30 and the place was totally empty. Greeted by a very pleasant young man and girl, we then went on to enjoy a really fantastic meal. I'd never say I was an expert but I certainly know what I like and what's cooked well. My wife started with a crab dish and thoroughly enjoyed it. I had the mushroom bruschetta. To follow, we had the five spiced duck and the seafood spaghetti - wow! I like most fish but wouldn't say I was a seafood lover but this was great. It was the best laugh and the most work I've ever had eating my dinner. As a bit of a seafood novice, I'd never tried lobster before, and didn't expect to either. But there it was, well, half of one, staring at me mischievously from under the spaghetti, brilliantly flavoured, generous mussels, scallops and king prawn. It was brilliant. So good, two of my workmates are going just on the back of me telling them about it. I've figured out what all the implements were for too! My wife adores duck and having had a taste, we always swap bits, I'd agree with her when she said it was fantastic. It's usually served pink but she asked for it to be cooked slightly more. It was done perfectly for her. Puddings finished off a cracking meal. I wasn't even going to have one but I'd enjoyed everything else so much, I decided to force one anyway! Six courses, bottle of wine, £73 quidleys! Excuse the pun. I thought that was brilliant. We'll be back.

I visited this restaurant with three friends and the food was lovely and enjoyed by all of our party. The pre-theatre menu was particularly good value. The prices of the drinks would put us off returning to this restaurant though, especially the prices of the mixers. £1.75 for a small bottle of diet coke and £1 for a dash of soda water seemed unreasonably high to us. We reduced our tip to reflect our disgust at these prices. I had posted this review previously but it was removed as I had mistakenly referred to the bottle of coke as a dash. In the interests of fairness, I'm told by the owners that these prices are typical for the area and also reflect recommended selling prices set by the manufacturer. They also wished to clarify that the soda was from a bottle and not from a machine.
