Regatta Restaurant

171 High Street, Aldeburgh, IP15 5AN

The seafood theme emerges strong and clear right from their name and the trend continues with the delicious food on offer at Regatta which is located in High Street in Aldeburgh. This Suffolk restaurant is an elegant dining space, high on comfort and easy on the eyes with its pleasant wall art depicting sailing boats, probably at a regatta. Locally caught fish and seafood star on the menu although meat, poultry and vegetarian dishes are also available for those who feel the need to move out of the realm of the sublimely fishy. Starters might bring you tiger prawn tempura with dipping sauce followed by a main course of gratin of crayfish and leek thermidor or well hung Scottish grilled sirloin steak.

Favourites amongst desserts could include the sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream or a selection of British cheeses and the wine list is adequate, featuring some by glass and others by the bottle. Regatta's special themed gourmet evenings held regularly are very popular.

REVIEWS OF Regatta Restaurant

Hayley (21 May 2009)

I went to the restaurant last Friday with a few friends. I have to say I was a little nervous as previously had indifferent meals here. I was looking forward to the possibility of a lovely butternut curry I had there over the winter. I was most disappointed when I found that this was not on the menu and was a little anxious as to what to choose - they tend to have a lot of fish on the menu. For my starter I chose 'chick pea curry with mackerel, onion bhaji and chutney' and my main - wild mushroom, butternut and spinach lasagne - I often chose random meals at restaurants. At this point my English fails to help me choose a word that can sum up my impression of this meal. Both dishes were presented beautifully, but the impression it left on my taste buds will last a long while. All my friends shared the same opinion of their own meals. Steak was described as 'the best ever' and the lamb dish was also equally praised. I have to say we were in heaven eating this meal. The food was served quickly and by friendly staff, people in the restaurant were enjoying their evening and we were happy to pay the money for this very high quality meal. It was an exciting evening for my taste buds and I have been raving about it ever since. I can only apologise now for not having the best superlatives for describing this simply astounding meal. Thank you and we look forward to our next visit.

HC (9 April 2007)

My friend and I had a fantastic meal at Regatta the other evening (April 2007). Service was friendly, prompt and unobtrusive.

There were 5 or 6 fishy specials as well as the main menu, from which I chose a dozen langoustines served with melted butter, salad and chips for £16. I got 14 delicious langoustines which made up for not getting any salad (didn't query it as wasn't bothered.) Best chips in the world! My friend's steak (£15.50) was perfectly cooked too.

I didn't enjoy my dessert of pistachio cheesecake (£5) but this was a personal thing, not that anything was wrong with it. Regatta is famous locally for its fudge and Malteser ice-cream (£3.50) and this didn't disappoint my friend who is, by her own admission, "not really an ice cream person".

We washed it all down with a £15 bottle of Muscadet sur Lie which was delicious.
