Restaurant at Bowlish House
Wells Road, Shepton Mallet, BA4 5JD
This incredibly pretty house, recently brought back to life by Darren Carter and Jason Goy, now offers a restaurant with rooms in elegant surroundings. The restaurant, described as 'intimate' in one guide is painted a deep aubergine which possibly prompts a reflection on the famous remark about a leading politician, "something of the night . . . ." The effect is dramatic. The day is split into four periods of eating, with dinner as the main event. Darren offers a two or three course menu, starting with a selection of canapés before going on to, say, starters of smoked haddock on a bed of lemon and ginger risotto, or a warm salad of asparagus with feta and quail's egg. Vegetarians are kept in mind with a delicate Mediterranean tart accompanied by garlic mash and a green pepper crème frâiche. This incredibly pretty house, recently brought back to life by Darren Carter and Jason Goy, now offers a restaurant with rooms in elegant surroundings. Breast of duck on coconut noodles with a cherry sauce marks a welcome return to basics and the puddings tend to follow suit with steamed chocolate pudding accompanied by double chocolate ice cream and caramel sauce, and fresh fruit salad with crème chiboust well up the list. Menus follow the seasons and total freshness is assured.
If the contents of the cellar depend upon the temperature, though recent research now seems to cast some doubts, Bowlish House is fortunate. A spring under the cellar flags links up with a small stream to give a remarkably consistent temperature, varying no more than 2 or 3 degrees winter or summer. The enterprise is all part of a long term renovation of this beautiful Grade 2 listed Georgian Palladian house, which everyone wants to see succeed.

REVIEWS OF Restaurant at Bowlish House
Sadcjd (13 July 2009)
Based on the previous review we decided to give Bowlish House a try and were very glad we did. The welcome was friendly as we were shown into the lounge for a pre-dinner drink and choosing of our food. We all went for the six-courses taster menu. The food was fabulous and portions of good size. Service was excellent and we will definitely be returning!

I have just been to the Bowlish House with my wife. We went on a Saturday night and chose from the set six course menu; an al a carte menu is also available and it looks good. On arrival you are taken to the lounge where we had a pre dinner G and T and ordered. As we were eating from the set menu we only had three options for each course, however, the options are varied and catered for most tastes. Our canapés were well presented and very tasty. Shortly afterwards we were taken to the dining room for the rest of our meal. To mark our anniversary we had a bottle of Prosecco, however, the wine list was comprehensive with a very good selection but be prepared to pay for good wine, remember this is not a supermarket. The meal was, as I have come to expect from the Bowlish House and not my first time, all of a very high quality, well cooked and presented on the plate in a way that sets high expectation for what you are about to enjoy and you will enjoy. Now I’m not a big foodie but I know what I like and the Bowlish House always delivers good flavours cooked to perfection. I have also had a Sunday roast there and again it’s very good and for the price, I would say excellent value for money when you look at the standard of a lot of pubs and what they charge for less quality. One last thing is the service; the members of staff are friendly and very attentive to your needs and that definitely adds to what is not just a meal but a dining experience.
