Restaurant at Candlesticks Hotel

1 Church Lane, Stamford, PE9 2JU

Located in one of the oldest parts of the historic stone town of Stamford, south of the river, Candlesticks has been run by the Pinto family since 1975, during which time it has grown from a small enterprise to its present comfortable and financially viable stature. If one was to choose a word to summarise Candlesticks it would have to be "cosy", with stacks of atmosphere and a definite feeling of staying with friends. The intimate dining room is located in the cellars, and full use has been made of the local stone, which responds well to candlelight. An extensive menu makes maximum capital out of sound ingredients, including fresh deliveries of fish, with some good vegetarian options.

The silver service is impeccable, with crisp napery, polished glassware and a carefully selected wine list. At the end of the meal a comprehensive range of liqueurs, brandies, single malts and cigars await your close attention.

Further accommodation has recently been acquired bringing the total to eight superbly furnished bedrooms.

REVIEWS OF Restaurant at Candlesticks Hotel

Jeff Smith (27 August 2009)

I visited Candlesticks again and we have been celebrating special occasions there since 1985. They always have fresh food, cooked to perfection and at a set price, so no surprises. It's good to see that silver service still survives in a world blighted by fast food. We have now moved further away but this restaurant is still worth the eighty mile round trip even if we have to pop a cork back in the bottle and bring the rest home to finish.

Charles Conran (27 March 2009)

I booked this restaurant for Mother’s Day lunch on a recommendation by a work colleague. My wife and I had fresh grilled sardines and individual beef Wellington, which was fantastic, the pastry was crisp and the quality of the fillet was melt in the mouth. My mother and father had a tomato and basil soup, which they loved, followed by roast sirloin and Welsh leg of lamb. The roast potatoes and vegetables were nicely seasoned and there were plenty of them. We all had cheese and biscuits as we were very full. We had a bottle of Sauvignon St Bris then a bottle of Guigal Chateauneuf du Pape 2001, which was a bargain at £29 and quite delicious. I had a memorable glass of 1994 Fonseca vintage port with my cheese. The restaurant was full and had a lovely warm atmosphere. We found the staff polite and unobtrusive. We just wish this place was closer to us as we live in Newmarket, but we will return, as I have booked for Easter.
