Restaurant at Castleman Hotel

Chettle, Blandford Forum, DT11 8DB

Castleman is a popular neighbourhood restaurant that serves dinner every evening and Sunday lunch, though they are happy to open for lunches on any other day for parties of twenty or more. Chefs Barbara Garnsworthy and Richard Morris cook varied, seasonal menus with the emphasis on enjoyment rather than fashion. Front of house Edward Bourke and Brendan Garnsworthy offer friendly, relaxed and professional service. It is a former dower house, which, though a hotel in the full sense, majors strongly on the dining department, with excellent results. The approach is British in style and includes good local ingredients such as the meat from the butcher with his own abattoir in a nearby village, lots of garden produce, wild mushrooms and air-dried ham.

The approach is British in style and includes good local ingredients such as the meat from the butcher with his own abattoir in a nearby village, lots of garden produce, wild mushrooms and air-dried ham. Choices could include roulade of poached and smoked Loch Fyne salmon with dill mayonnaise; crab, prawn and lobster bisque or sautéed chicken livers on a potato pancake with pancetta and crème fraiche to commence with.

Followed by fillet steak with pate and red wine sauce; grilled sea bass on roasted vegetables in warm balsamic vinegar dressing or roast partridge with bacon and red wine sauce served with sloe and apple jelly, and finishing with blackberry and apple crumble with chilled vanilla custard; dark chocolate marquise with raspberries and cream or pear frangipane tart with caramel ice cream. The wine list tops out at about 50 bins and repays earnest attention.

REVIEWS OF Restaurant at Castleman Hotel

John Shield (28 March 2009)

Our friends introduced us to the delights of 'Castleman' last year and we're returning for a further weekend this March. Looking forward to the superb country surroundings, hearty welcome, excellent food and very comfortable rooms. This place is a real joy - relaxed and caring, authentic historical house in lovely grounds with generous hosts. You may have to book a while in advance if you want to stay but it's worth the wait. Don't miss this special experience.

Annie Heritage (20 July 2007)

Picture yourself walking into the panelled hall of an elegant dowry house. You are greeted by friendly, courteous staff into an airy period drawing room and seated on a comfortable sofa for an aperitif. If the weather is cool, a fire may be crackling away merrily in the original fireplace. Or perhaps you'd prefer to peruse the menu in the cosy flagstoned bar, or the stunning wood-panelled smoking room (now non-smoking!)

Once seated at your table in the elegant dining room, take time to admire the watercolours adorning the walls or if it is daytime, gaze over the tranquil gardens. The menu changes daily and you will be pondering for some time over the fresh and seasonal offerings - perhaps some Lyme Bay scallops to start, then a locally caught venison pie, sea bass or an imaginative vegetarian choice? And don't forget to leave some room for dessert - homemade fresh strawberry ice-cream perhaps? Or exquisite meringues, meltingly gooey on the inside and lightly crisp on the outside?

Once satiated, retire to the drawing room for a freshly brewed tea or coffee and if you can manage it, a complimentary home made chocolate truffle. The food is always wonderful - fresh, seasonal and mostly locally supplied ingredients are transformed into delicious dishes, often simple but perfectly matched. The staffs make you feel like a long-awaited special guest and the service is friendly, efficient and unobtrusive; nothing is ever too much trouble.

All in all, dining at the Castleman feels luxurious, indulgent but never pretentious. And it has to be said that the prices are extremely reasonable. It really is an experience not to be missed - whether it's a romantic dinner for two, a family get-together or a relaxing Sunday lunch, you are sure of superb food and a warm welcome. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
