Restaurant at Ebury Hotel

65-67 New Dover Road, Canterbury, CT1 3DX

A handsome Victorian building built in the 1840's, the Ebury offers British food with a strong French influence. A typical starter might be a warm salad of chicken livers, bacon and artichoke. A pan-fried pork escalope served with apples and calvados from the hands of Chef Jean-Pierre Carol is likely to be an uplifting experience, particularly if followed by the chocolate torte served with a crème anglicise. A sound wine list with a not unnatural bias across the Channel.

REVIEWS OF Restaurant at Ebury Hotel

Mr G Jones (31 May 2008)

It was wonderful to find a local restaurant hidden away inside a hotel, which offers food that is truly makes for an exceptional experience. I went to the restaurant at Ebury hotel in March and I'm going there again this evening. I'm a vegetarian and the last time I had the delicious butternut squash with goats’ cheese and pine nuts to start, and wild mushroom risotto for mains. It was light on the palate and very tasty, to the extent that it never got boring as risottos very often do, with a richness that was complex but not cloying - delightful. For dessert, I had a warm tarte tatin which was clearly homemade. The whole experience was excellent.

My friend had a feta cheese salad to start and duck breast for her main course. The chef’s cheesecake swept away her senses. I had a slice of her cheesecake and can tell you it is worth the journey for this, if nothing else. The setting is a quasi-residential area of Canterbury, just on the outskirts of the town centre, so a pleasant area for a restaurant. The service was good, as was the ambience. My only complaint is the lack of people, although several tables were occupied, I think this restaurant should be packed! A decent three course meal at Ebury is £25 and it is prepared with fresh ingredients and love. I can only hope people will read this and go and try the exquisite taste sensations offered at this little gem of a restaurant.
