Restaurant at Fowey Hall Description

In a part of the world where superlative views are rather taken for granted, Fowey Hall is in a class of its own. The homely Cornish fisherfolk must have wondered what on earth was going on when Sir Charles Hanson, a former Lord Mayor of London started building this handsome, but seriously large house after he had retired from the pressures of municipal pride. Completed in 1899 the house was - and remains - outstandingly luxurious, designed to entertain royalty, and with cross-channel views that are mind-blowing. The handsome oak-panelled dining room (no MDF for Sir Charles) offers a wide-ranging largely English menu, but with a marked Mediterranean influence. As with everything else at Fowey Hall the seafood is superlative. Nor, considering the style and quality, are the restaurant prices out of the way. As one might be expecting, the wine list follows the same trend of excellence and some very sporting choices await those with deep pockets, but with house wine at £13.50, fear not.

Your Reviews of Restaurant at Fowey Hall

Julie Skelton (20 April 2007)

Highly recommended, not least for the fine views of the Fowey Estuary. This luxury family hotel's restaurant is, in the evening, a child-free zone and serves top-notch, well-presented cuisine as well as superb desserts (the sticky toffee pudding went down particularly well with my husband!). The variations on seafood and - for a celebration - the lobster are well worth a try. Extensive wine cellar and helpful, friendly staff.
