Restaurant at Gilpin Hotel & Lake House
Crook Road, Windermere, LA23 3NE
There are 20 acres of gardens, moors and woodland that surround this lovely hotel and it is ideally situated for someone looking for a comfortable base from which to spend time in the Lakes, confident that the inner man will be cosseted and cherished. Their restaurant holds three AA rosettes and numerous other awards which prove their competence admirably. Under head chef Russel Plowman, the cuisine is modern English with an emphasis on the finest ingredients. A ballotine of organic salmon with horseradish and potato mousse and beetroot salad makes an interesting starting. The roasted sirloin of Cumbrian native beef bordelaise and red wine shallots to follow is excellent and the pistachio crème brûlée with vanilla ice cream is immensely appealing. There are 20 acres of gardens, moors and woodland that surround this lovely hotel and it is ideally situated for someone looking for a comfortable base from which to spend time in the Lakes, confident that the inner man will be cosseted and cherished. REVIEWS OF Restaurant at Gilpin Hotel & Lake House
Chris Tyson (19 August 2008)
Gilpin Lodge is the best place to eat in the Lake District. The place itself is luxurious; the perfect setting for Michelin starred dining. Both lunch and dinner represent terrific value for money. The food isn't particularly edgy, just solid Michelin one star food, which time and again proves itself to be the tastiest available. Courses are always beautifully presented, in August for example, the term 'summer on a plate' springs to mind. Flavours are delicate and the quality of produce stands out. Service is always impeccable and guarantees you an excellent stay. I say again, Gilpin Lodge is the best place to eat in the Lake District.
