Restaurant at Highgrove House Hotel
Old Loans Road, Troon, KA10 7HL
I recall Highgrove House opening up in the 1980s, times when a wider spread of eating out was hard to find on Scotland's West Coast, but is now happily much more widely available. In many ways Highgrove was, and remains, the flagship of the Costley empire, appropriately enough since it was first built as the home of a Sea Captain. There are lunch, dinner and supper menus, all with extensive choices that turn the decision-taking process into a mouthwatering trip. A choice of around twelve starters includes fresh oysters, Shetland mussels, House of Burns smoked salmon, and pan-fried langoustines. Do I detect a seafood-inclined menu - darned right I do - they know what sells. Main courses follow much the same stream, with langoustine and scallop thermidor, local seabass caesar salad, strips of beef Stroganoff, and grilled sirloin steak.I recall Highgrove House opening up in the 1980s, times when a wider spread of eating out was hard to find on Scotland's West Coast, but is now happily much more widely available. Main courses follow much the same stream, with langoustine and scallop thermidor, local seabass caesar salad, strips of beef Stroganoff, and grilled sirloin steak. Lobster is a speciality, very much at the whim of the market, as ever and as it should be. A great range of salads have a good solid base, no limp, over-inflated greenery here.
Puddings at Highgrove are exotic to the point of flamboyance, with some original twists on well-known names. It is little wonder that Highgrove has retained its popularity over the years.

REVIEWS OF Restaurant at Highgrove House Hotel
Jill and David (3 July 2011)
On Sunday at 8 PM, I was home after another faultless evening meal at Highgrove House. The new elevated deck area gives a fantastic180 degree view over to Arran - up almost as far up as Argyll and down to Ailsa Craig. As usual the food was delicious and service polite and quick. It is very reasonable for a two course Sunday evening meal and very relaxing. Well recommended.
Duncan (29 December 2008)
The surroundings are lovely as is the interior and the toilets are spotless, very friendly at reception, but that was as good as it got. We were a table of eighteen, the service was very poor, some had finished their starters before others were served, and the same went for the main courses as they were served slowly as well. The vegetables and potatoes arrived at intervals long after main courses were served. The quality of food for a place of this standard was really poor, and definitely not value for money. My fish came with a salad served in an inexpensive glass looking plastic bowl. As for presentation of food, it was an amateurish attempt. Highly recommended for location, but eat elsewhere, I have been to a fish and chip restaurant in nearby Troon that gave better value for money and better tasting food.
