Restaurant at St Michael's Manor Hotel

I travel a lot and have never come across such a lovely hotel. My first impression of the place was that of a beautiful building set in a glorious garden, only a few minutes walk into town. The staff were courteous, friendly and made us feel completely at home. The food was delicious, simple and modern British - I heard that they had a new chef and he really seems to know his job. It was as if we were in a London restaurant. The puddings were the best part - fantastic combinations and not too heavy. One of the unusual aspects of our evening was that they had an incredibly helpful sommelier. Though I know very little about wine, and don’t like spending too much, he recommended a fantastic wine, which not only complemented both our dishes, but also didn’t hurt our wallet. The view from the conservatory where we sat down was amazing - a huge lake, mature trees and long rolling manicured lawns. All in all, I can highly recommend this hotel and restaurant. We would definitely be going back.

I found this restaurant very disappointing. The location was gorgeous and the garden is heavenly on a beautiful summer's evening, but the food is exceedingly undistinguished. We started with a glass of tasteless house champagne followed by such ordinary dishes that I can't even remember what they were. I do remember the bread, which was hard and far from the exquisite burst of texture and flavour that is expected at a restaurant with this level of pretension.
