REVIEWS OF Restaurant at Strattons Hotel

Wilf (16 March 2008)

What can we say - excellent. The food, service and friendliness of the staff were second to none and made my birthday meal a very special occasion. We will definitely be going back.

Strattons pride themselves on their food and although it all looked very nicely presented, it tasted distinctly average, suffering from what seemed like a maniacal use of ingredients for ingredient’s sake and vast overuse of 'crunchy' kale garnish, which was cooked to a nasty chewy finish. We stayed for a couple of nights (very nice room) and were quite dismayed to find that the menu choices were virtually the same each evening.

As someone who prefers vegetarian cuisine, I was limited by their selection, which was very heavy on meats and fish and lacking in anything else. In the end, I opted for a meat dish on the second night and can honestly say that I've never had such poorly cooked beef. It was fatty, tasteless and certainly not worth the hour and a half wait due to painfully slow service. No one asked if things were ok with our meal and no one asked if we'd enjoyed it - not on either night.

Breakfasts again were average (I’ve had far better in cheap B and Bs) and the portions paltry. Do you want toast? You'll get a whole slice - not what you might call generous.

It turned out that Strattons were too self-important to stock condiments such as ketchup! I might be able to understand this if were they serving nouvelle cuisine, but sausage bacon and eggs? Please.
