An amalgam of three thatched 17th century cottages has resulted in this quite laid-back hotel where chef Paul Bending and his team work wonders with the local produce. And that is really the crux of the matter - local ingredients with the addition of more specialised items garnered from a greater distance. The results are memorably satisfying. No prizes for deducing a heavily French wine list to be in evidence, with good choices and fair prices. Although we have lived in Pinhoe for ten years we have never thought of visiting this hotel. In July this year as a special birthday treat, my wife booked a meal for three people. From the moment we entered we were treated with a level of service that has long been forgotten in English hotels. We were made to feel very welcome, as if being long lost friends but at the same time it was not over the top. We ordered our meal from the comfort of a fine chair in the bar area and were soon called through to a very nice dinning area. The food was excellent from start to finish as was the service, nothing seemed to be much trouble, we all agreed that the Barton Cross Hotel is one of the best, if not the very best in service and food standard, they should be very proud of a great hotel.

Have been an occasional visitor over many years and this trip was as good as ever. Plenty of variety in the menu and a good wine list in a very comfortable atmosphere get you off to a good start. Very good cooking and excellent presentation lived up to expectations for all six of our party, right through four courses and we came away feeling we had enjoyed both high quality and good value. Service from the kitchen was occasionally a little slow, but not worrying, and the odd waft of cigarette smoke from somewhere (not the restaurant) was the only downside. Well worth the excursion.
