Restaurant at The Barton Cross Hotel

Have been an occasional visitor over many years and this trip was as good as ever. Plenty of variety in the menu and a good wine list in a very comfortable atmosphere get you off to a good start. Very good cooking and excellent presentation lived up to expectations for all six of our party, right through four courses and we came away feeling we had enjoyed both high quality and good value. Service from the kitchen was occasionally a little slow, but not worrying, and the odd waft of cigarette smoke from somewhere (not the restaurant) was the only downside. Well worth the excursion.

We moved to Stoke Canon three years ago and discovered this gem almost literally on our doorsteps. If ever we need a treat, The Barton Cross is at the top of our list. The food was excellent, with varied and interesting vegetarian options. The service was friendly, but not overly so and a lovely old world atmosphere made for a terrific night out. It far outclasses any of the generic chain store restaurants in Exeter, where we lived for ten years, but is only a five minute drive out of the city. Of course we have the bonus of being able to walk home.
