Restaurant at The Black Swan
Oldstead, York, YO61 4BL
'Charming' is just one of the epithets you would use to describe The Black Swan at Oldstead, a delightful gastropub just over 20 miles from York with 2 AA Rosettes and a Rising Michelin Star. Their refurbished bedrooms have also won five stars from the AA. Located not too far from historic Byland Abbey, the simple and understated décor with oak floors, Persian rugs, and candles emitting a soft glow from atop their perch in brass holders add favourably to the ambience. The menu features traditional as well as modern British fare, using fresh and locally sourced ingredients, with meat brought in from neighbouring farms. For starters, you could try the hand-dived king scallops with cauliflower puree, golden raisins, poppadoms and a taste of curry and then move on to the saddle of venison with homemade black pudding and beetroot and horseradish risotto. The menu features traditional as well as modern British fare, using fresh and locally sourced ingredients, with meat brought in from neighbouring farms. Finish indulgently with a valhrona chocolate fondant with peanut butter ice cream and salted caramel.
The bar is warm and welcoming with stone flagged floor, an open log fire, oak fittings, window seats and antique furnishings; just the place to relax with a mug of beer in the company of friends.

REVIEWS OF Restaurant at The Black Swan
Mr & Mrs G Williamson (28 June 2010)
From the point we pulled up outside the Black Swan, the postcard setting set us back in awesome. Once we parked the car to the rear we walked around to the front to sit on a bench just to take in the settings we found ourselves in. Within a minute we were approached and asked if we required any help, from that point the service was second to none. We booked in and were escorted to our room; it was the one with the four poster bed and the most amazing copper bath. The standard of the furnishings was top end. We had the fantastic feeling of being spoilt, being somewhere extra special. On arriving at the restaurant we were met with a very warm welcome and again treat with the greatest of respect. After enjoying a few tastes at the bar we proceeded up stairs to the table that was booked for us. For the next two hours we sat in sheer delight as one after another plate of pure artistic, culinary genius came to before us - pressed shoulder of lamb, yum! The qualities of the materials used were at a standard that any culinary expert would be excited with. I cannot tell you how much both my wife and I enjoyed the whole experience. It was amazing; we would or will return at the earliest opportunity.
