Restaurant at The Castle of Brecon Hotel

The Castle Square, Brecon, LD3 9DB

This historic hotel, formerly a coaching inn, is built on the site of the former much older castle, the remains of which are alongside the hotel. A bistro type menu with wide choices is on offer throughout the day in the bar and restaurant. In the evenings the restaurant has a more formal menu which could include a homemade soup of the day, a venison terrine served with an apple and whiskey salad and a redcurrant, heather and honey dressing or a salad of salmon and smoky bacon served with a dill and mustard dressing. Amongst the main courses pan fried breast of duck served with a mango and mint sauce might compete with a steamed chicken supreme served on a bed of broccoli and accompanied by a red wine and Stilton sauce.

REVIEWS OF Restaurant at The Castle of Brecon Hotel

Mrs James (17 February 2009)

I have just seen the review left by a customer on the 14th February. I also attended this night and was very impressed with the atmosphere created, the members of staff were extremely friendly and the meal was incredible, we had the same menu as the previous message. It was as described on the menu. We tipped generously as it was well deserved and the Castle Hotel has really improved from the previous owners.

JPDR (15 February 2009)

I went to the Castle Hotel for a Valentine’s meal with my partner with an open view of what to expect after not very good reviews being given to me. The evening started well with champagne and a rose being given on arrival, however it was when we were seated in the restaurant with rather odd modern pop music it started to all go wrong. The starter of pepper and tomato soup tasted of water with pepper, and a duck liver pâté with no bread or toast was lumpy, congealed and served with ready bought spicy apple chutney. After a long 30 minute wait our mains arrived, that consisted of very dry pork, baby carrots and sweet corn; we couldn’t put our forks into it as they were not cooked although the manageress was adamant saying that they were cooked al dente, I informed her that they were in fact raw, very hard mash potato and around a teaspoon of gravy. This was sent back after one mouthful and we went straight onto dessert, which was the only good thing about the meal, although we were both so hungry anything tasted good at that point. The meal was such a disappointment it had ruined what should have been a very lovely night. We will never go back there again and now think we should have listened to all the bad reviews we were told.
