Restaurant at The Clachaig Inn

Clachaig, nr Ballachulish, PH49 4HX

Glencoe is well known for the infamous massacre of 1692 when the Campbells committed arguably the first known blue on blue by slaughtering the MacDonalds, largely due to a communication failure. Nowadays it is more widely regarded for its spectacular but sometimes brooding setting, in the middle of which sits the Clachaig Inn, awarded Le Routiers's accolade of Real Ale Pub of the Year in 2004. If you want a quick and informal snack go for a bowl of chilli beef, topped with cheddar cheese and served with nachos and salad. More formal is the dining room, with a starter, say, of haggis and creamy white onion with a Drambuie sauce, closely pursued by a Clachaig venison casserole in the form of tender cuts of Lochaber venison, with blackberries, juniper berries all finished with a dash of Scotch whiskey.

Assuming that you choose to pass up on the Athol Brose there is always the Ecclefechan tart, a mix of dried fruits and nuts on a pastry base, served hot with cream or custard depending on your whim.

Whilst there is a wine list that should not be lightly dismissed The Clachaig Inn is more famously known for the excellence and diversity of its real ales, with a Beer Festival as part of the ongoings and a number of awards over the years.
