Restaurant at The Grange Hotel

This handsome, red-brick house was built in 1773. Located in the centre of Brampton it is handy for Huntingdon Racecourse and the railway station. It was converted into a restaurant in 1981, but has been transformed since it was bought by Nick and Susanna Steiger in 2000. A fortnightly changing menu offers dishes with quite wide appeal, though the essential trend is towards traditional with a modern inclination. Thus scallops with ginger boudin, cashew nuts, spring onions and apple cream or croustade of tuna and tomatoes with olives, anchovies and basil ice-cream to start, followed by a trio of lamb - braised shoulder, roast loin and pan-fried kidney with fondant potato and French beans or grilled sea-bass with croquette potatoes, baby fennel and a herb and mussel broth. To finish perhaps cherry soup with white chocolate ice cream and small cinnamon dumplings. House wines from around £11.50, but do not ignore the list which is serious stuff compiled, I would say by somebody who knows and loves decent wine. They also serve a simpler bar menu, including wonderful sandwiches on either brown, white bread or ciabatta.
